MINI enthusiasts and driving aficionados alike have reason to rejoice as the iconic MINI Cooper Convertible returns to the production line at MINI Plant Oxford. For the first time since 2015, this beloved model is once again being manufactured at the home of MINI, joining the MINI Cooper 3-Door and 5-Door models in the production facility. With a legacy that spans two decades, the MINI Cooper Convertible is an enduring symbol of open-top driving joy and stylish British engineering.

The revival of this model marks a significant milestone for both MINI and the plant, reinforcing Oxford’s status as the heart of the MINI brand. The return of the MINI Cooper Convertible is no mere coincidence. This year, MINI Plant Oxford has seen a remarkable achievement, launching three new models at the facility, including the revamped MINI Convertible. Markus Grüneisl, Head of Plants Oxford and Swindon, expressed his pride in the team, stating, “It’s an amazing achievement for our team to launch three new models at our Oxford Plant this year, and I am proud of our exceptional workforce.”

The MINI Cooper Convertible: An Icon Reborn
Since its debut in 2004, the MINI Cooper Convertible has captivated drivers with its perfect blend of sporty performance, compact design, and open-air driving exhilaration. Over the years, it has become an icon of the MINI family, with more than 100,000 models sold in the UK alone. From its early days with retro-inspired styling to its more refined and modern design today, the MINI Cooper Convertible has remained true to its roots while embracing the latest automotive advancements.

The fourth generation of the MINI Cooper Convertible, launched with fanfare in 2024, arrives with a revised exterior design that stays true to the brand’s signature look while incorporating fresh, contemporary elements. The model boasts an updated, sustainable interior, featuring materials that reflect MINI’s commitment to eco-friendly production processes. As with all MINI vehicles, the new Cooper Convertible combines cutting-edge technology with a driving experience that is second to none.

“We are thrilled about the start of production of the MINI Convertible, which is now being produced again at the Oxford plant, the home of MINI. Unique in its class, the MINI Convertible offers unparalleled, brand-typical driving fun, combined with boundless freedom and great emotions,” says Stefan Richmann, Head of MINI. The car’s iconic design is paired with modern technology, ensuring that every drive is an unmatched open-air experience for the customer.

A Celebration of British Manufacturing
The production of the new MINI Cooper Convertible is not only a win for the brand but also for British manufacturing. BMW Group Plant Swindon plays a crucial role in producing the body pressings and sub-assemblies, while the advanced four-cylinder petrol engines are constructed at BMW Group Plant Hams Hall in North Warwickshire. These components then come together at MINI Plant Oxford, where the final assembly, paintwork, and body shell production take place. This seamless collaboration between the three UK-based BMW Group sites showcases the strength of British manufacturing and highlights the significant contributions of the Oxford plant to the automotive industry.

A Legacy of Excellence at MINI Plant Oxford
MINI Plant Oxford is a cornerstone of the MINI brand’s global production, and its historical significance cannot be overstated. As one of the oldest automotive plants in the world, it has been in continuous operation since 1913. In 2023, the plant celebrated its 110th anniversary, a testament to its enduring legacy and commitment to excellence. Last year, it produced over 20% of all UK-manufactured cars, further solidifying its position as a leader in both technology and sustainability in automotive production.

With a proud history and a future that embraces innovation, MINI Plant Oxford continues to be at the heart of the MINI family, ensuring that each new model, including the MINI Cooper Convertible, is built to the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship.
