In a continued effort to stay at the cutting edge of automotive engineering, Milltek has announced a significant investment in state-of-the-art laser welding technology. The move, which includes the installation of dedicated laser bays in both the Ilkeston and Derby manufacturing facilities, marks a major step forward in enhancing the company’s production capabilities and reducing manufacturing times.

Milltek’s decision to adopt laser welding is a direct response to the evolving needs of precision manufacturing. Kev Hall, Milltek’s Technical Operations Manager, explains that this new technology is a strategic upgrade that promises to revolutionize the company’s manufacturing processes. “We are seeing significant changes in welding equipment,” Hall notes. “Laser welding is a strategic enhancement to our manufacturing processes. It doesn’t generate the high temperatures of traditional welding methods, so there is less heat and potential distortion. This makes it ideal for more intricate parts, and it can dramatically reduce production times and costs while improving efficiency.”

The implementation of laser welding technology brings a host of advantages, especially when it comes to the production of Milltek’s high-performance exhaust systems. The precision offered by laser welding ensures the accuracy required for the most intricate and demanding components, particularly for customers seeking top-tier exhaust solutions that blend design and performance. With less distortion and fewer heat-related challenges, the technology also ensures a more consistent and reliable product, which is crucial for meeting the increasing demand for Milltek’s systems.

In addition to the technical advancements, this investment in laser welding is having a profound impact on Milltek’s workforce. The company is leveraging this new technology to upskill existing employees and create new job opportunities. Hall highlights the importance of this initiative: “By providing comprehensive training in laser welding, with no prior experience required to master the technique, we can quickly bring existing staff and new apprentices up to the highest standards. This enables them to acquire valuable skills, ensuring their professional growth in a short period.”

Milltek Invests In Latest Laser Welding Technology To Revolutionize Production And Workforce Development

Milltek’s commitment to workforce development aligns with its broader strategy to maintain a skilled, adaptable team that can handle the demands of an increasingly sophisticated industry. The company has made substantial strides in offering apprenticeships and training programs, positioning itself as an employer that nurtures talent while embracing technological innovation.

The timing of this investment is particularly critical, as Milltek continues to experience growth in demand for its performance exhaust systems. In the past year alone, the company has sold more than 16,500 systems, underscoring the importance of streamlining the production process to keep pace with the expanding market. This growth has been driven by Milltek’s continued commitment to innovation, which includes the use of plastic prototyping and 3D printing technology to enhance product development and design.

By adopting modular design principles, Milltek is able to adapt its exhaust systems to meet a variety of customer needs. This flexibility allows the company to offer solutions that range from road-legal systems to those specifically designed for motorsport use, all while ensuring compliance with varying international regulations on emissions, noise, and performance.

Despite its embrace of cutting-edge technologies, Milltek remains steadfast in its belief in the importance of real-world testing. The company’s commitment to quality and performance is evident in its practice of purchasing development cars for 90 percent of its new-build exhaust systems. This allows Milltek to conduct rigorous testing, ensuring that every exhaust system meets the highest standards in terms of packaging, emissions, noise, heat management, and performance.

As Milltek continues to invest in both advanced technology and its workforce, the company is positioning itself for sustained success in a rapidly evolving industry. With laser welding technology at the forefront of its manufacturing processes, Milltek is not only enhancing the precision and efficiency of its exhaust systems but also reinforcing its role as an industry leader committed to innovation, quality, and the development of the next generation of automotive engineers.
