On January 21st, 2025, MG made its highly anticipated debut in South Africa at the luxurious Langhams Lifestyle Estate in Johannesburg. The event, marked by the presence of over 100 media representatives, business partners, and special guests, heralded a new era for the iconic MG brand. Among the distinguished attendees was His Excellency Wu Peng, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to South Africa. Ambassador Wu praised MG’s arrival, highlighting its significance in strengthening the ties between South Africa and China.
This landmark occasion was a testament to MG’s commitment to innovation, exceptional design, and customer satisfaction, as emphasized by Sky Zhang, General Manager of MG South Africa. Unveiling the brand’s new tagline, “Exceed Expectation,” Zhang declared, “I am thrilled about this new era for MG in South Africa,” setting the stage for the brand’s exciting journey in the local market.
A Century of Heritage and Modern Excellence
Tracing its origins to 1920, MG’s storied history began with British motoring pioneer William Morris and his General Manager, Cecil Kimber, who introduced faster and sportier vehicles under the Morris Garages name. Over a century later, MG has evolved into a global powerhouse under the stewardship of SAIC Motor, China’s largest automotive company. Since acquiring the MG marque in 2007, SAIC has propelled the brand to unprecedented heights, with MG contributing to SAIC’s impressive 5.02 million vehicle sales in 2023, 88% of which were outside China.
MG’s arrival in South Africa is backed by a robust infrastructure, including a National Parts Distribution Centre in Isando, Kempton Park. This facility ensures a reliable supply chain and reinforces MG’s dedication to after-sales excellence. To further instill confidence, MG offers an industry-leading warranty of 7 years or 200,000 km and a comprehensive service plan, setting a new benchmark for reliability.
A Star-Studded Launch and Future Aspirations
The event featured presentations from Ian Nicholls, Network and Strategy Director for MG SA, and Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director at SAIC Design Advanced London. Nicholls, with over 30 years in the automotive industry, underscored MG’s commitment to delivering exceptional value for money. Gotham, meanwhile, captivated the audience with insights into MG’s design philosophy, stating, “MG was born from passion and a dream – at the heart of the brand is a drive to achieve as much with as little as possible.”
Attendees were treated to a preview of MG’s initial lineup in South Africa, which includes the ZS compact crossover, the stylish HS SUV, and the groundbreaking Cyberster, the world’s first all-electric two-seater convertible.
