June 17, 2013 – Iconic British brand MG has returned to track racing with a bang. Launched at the start of 2012, the MG KX Momentum Racing Team has become a force to be reckoned with in the highly competitive British Touring Car Championship. The team is currently lying second in the championship, only twenty points behind leaders Honda Yuasa Racing.

MG BTCC

MG currently fields two MG6 touring cars, race prepared and run by the highly renowned Triple Eight Race Engineering Team. BTCC legend and multiple champion Jason Plato is the team’s number one driver, and is currently lying second in the championship. Plato is partnered by BTCC rookie Sam Tordoff, who joined the team in 2013.

Plato has finished in the top three of the BTCC nine times, won the championship twice, and holds the record for the most overall race wins in the BTCC (78). A double victory during the recent Oulton Park round of the championship added to this tally. Plato’s double was sweetened by Tordoff claiming second during the first race of the day.

It was clear right from the start that the MG6 was going to be a tough contender. On its debut at Brands Hatch in 2012, the car was on the pace straight away, despite hardly turning a wheel during its build and development. It scored a third place in only its second race, and achieved a maiden victory in the hands of Plato in just its third outing. Overall Plato won six races during 2012, placing him 3rd in the driver’s championship; while the team achieved 2nd in the manufacturer’s championship.

MG is no stranger when it comes to motorsport. From as early as 1930, the company sold dedicated racing cars, such as the C-Type and Q-Type to enthusiasts. Several world speed records were set by Captain George Eyston, driving a range of experimental MG cars. The MG EX135 set a new speed record in 1939, when it topped 320 km/h in the hands of Goldie Gardner.

By joining the BTCC, MG is returning to its roots, and showing that the marque is as competitive as ever. The next race takes place at the Croft Racing Circuit on 22-23 June 2013.
