MG Motor South Africa made an unforgettable first appearance at the 15th edition of the Simola Hillclimb, one of the country’s premier automotive festivals, held from 1–4 May 2025 in Knysna. The brand’s presence was marked by a seamless blend of heritage, innovation, and electrified performance, headlined by the all-electric MG Cyberster and the debut of the hybrid MG3. In doing so, MG paid tribute to its motorsport lineage while confidently steering into the future of mobility.
A New Chapter at a Legendary Hillclimb
Simola Hillclimb 2025 was both celebratory and solemn. The event was cut short on Sunday after a tragic accident claimed the life of respected driver Pieter Joubert. As a heartfelt tribute, the remainder of the King of the Hill challenge was dedicated to his memory. Yet amid the emotional weight, MG’s presence brought a fresh charge of excitement to the competition, reflecting a brand at the forefront of transformation.
Taking centre stage was the MG Cyberster, a bold, all-electric roadster that encapsulates MG’s vision for the electric era. With its 375 kW dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, retro-futuristic styling, and scissor doors, the Cyberster turned heads and rewrote expectations. More than a striking design exercise, it proved its capabilities on the steep and demanding Simola course, driven by one of South Africa’s most recognised automotive names: Ashley Oldfield.
Ashley Oldfield: Bringing Talent to the Tarmac
Behind the wheel of the Cyberster was Ashley Oldfield, a seasoned motoring journalist and former GT Academy winner—the only South African to earn that title. Having competed internationally and now serving as Head of Content at Cars.co.za, Oldfield brought both credibility and racing pedigree to MG’s Simola campaign. This year marked his seventh appearance at the Hillclimb, and he entered the fray with a singular goal: to set the fastest-ever EV time up the hill in MG’s all-electric flagship.
Oldfield’s performance echoed MG’s resurgence in motorsport circles. Once known for its lightweight sports cars and racing pedigree, MG is now forging a bold new chapter—one defined by kilowatts and cutting-edge software instead of cubic inches and carburettors.

Cyberster: A Supercar Soul in an Electric Suit
The MG Cyberster is not just a nod to MG’s past—it’s a full-throttle declaration of intent. Designed in the UK, the roadster features a sculpted body, dramatic scissor doors, and a convertible soft top. Its electric drivetrain produces 375 kW and 725 Nm of torque, launching the Cyberster from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, and from 80 to 120 km/h in only 2.1 seconds—numbers typically reserved for supercars.
Underpinning this performance is a 77 kWh battery supporting both 11 kW AC and 144 kW DC fast charging, allowing for swift turnarounds and long-range confidence. Priced at R1,399,900, the Cyberster offers a unique proposition in South Africa: a high-performance electric sports car that blends luxury, speed, and exclusivity.
A Hybrid Companion: The All-New MG3
Sharing the spotlight at Simola was the new MG3 Hybrid, marking MG’s entry into the hybrid hatchback segment. Although details remain under wraps, its presence at the Hillclimb signalled the brand’s commitment to offering versatile electrified options to suit a variety of drivers—those craving adrenaline, and those seeking daily practicality with lower emissions.
Together, the Cyberster and MG3 embody MG’s reimagined identity, one rooted in its century-old racing spirit but recharged for the demands of a modern, sustainable world.
