The Euro VI engines undercut the stipulated emission limits and emit up to 90 percent less nitrogen oxides and 50 percent less soot particles than their predecessors. The essential advantages of the Unimog concept have been retained in full, despite the challenges of Euro VI: with over 1000 equipment and application options, the all-rounder for all seasons covers a broad scope of tasks which would otherwise require an entire fleet.

BlueEfficiency Power technology

With two totally new BlueEfficiency Power engines, the new Unimog not only meets the requirements of the Euro VI emissions standard but also offers more power and torque throughout the entire operating range – especially when operating implements.

Three four-cylinder and two six-cylinder variants of the OM 934 and OM 936 engine series are available, covering an output range from 115 kW (156 hp) to 220 kW (299 hp) with displacements of 5.1 l and 7.7 l.

Well-conceived cab concept

The implement carriers are provided with revised, ergonomically designed panoramic cabs featuring a particularly large panoramic windscreen. Daytime running lamps are integrated in the new bumpers and the windscreen wipers are now fitted above the windscreen. The view of the road and the implements is ideal and has been improved by the new camera monitoring system. The user-friendly interior with new instrument cluster, multifunction steering wheel, adjustable steering column and the steering-column lever to operate driving functions such as gearshifting or the new engine brake contribute to driving comfort. The removable joystick serves to control the hydraulics and also offers other functions such as reversing in the course of daily operations.

An innovative highlight offered by the Unimog implement carrier is the optionally available EasyDrive continuously variable traction drive. The synergy of hydrostatic drive and mechanical transmission enables smooth changes “on the move” – precisely aligned with the application at hand. The new Unimog hydrostatic drive now permits speeds of up to 50 km/h – the hydrostatic power has been increased by 20 percent.
New systems for working and power hydraulics

The new hydraulic system operates sensitively and with precision – and boasts a 30 percent increase in output. Attached implements can now be controlled more sensitively than ever before. The front PTO shaft now transfers power outputs up to a maximum of 160 kW.

The VarioPower power hydraulics system has also become more efficient: two circuits, each offering a hydraulic flow rate of 125 l and pressure of 280 bar, up to a maximum output of 58 kW per
circuit, are designed above all for driving continuous power consumers, such as add-on sweepers. The power hydraulics are available on Unimog models from U 318 upwards.

Public service vehicle solutions for the Mercedes-Benz Unimog

Two new “all-rounders” will be on show at the Mercedes-Benz stand at this year’s IFAT. The compact entry-level model of the Euro VI-generation Unimog U 218 is equipped with a snow plough and gritter from the Schmidt company for winter service operations. The panoramic cab provides for good working conditions even at temperatures as low as minus 30° C, thanks to programmable auxiliary heating, heated seats and a heated windscreen. Optimum traction and full control on slippery surfaces are made possible by permanent all-wheel drive, differential locks on the front and rear axle, disc brakes on all four wheels, anti-lock braking system and single tyres.

The Unimog U 527 will be premiered at IFAT 2014 as the new largest representative of the Unimog implement carrier model series. The vehicle will demonstrate its strengths in combination with a Trio boom-mowing combination from Mulag. The tasks on hand can be carried out as one-man jobs with a front- or rear-mounted mower. VarioPilot dual-mode steering enables the steering column to be shifted from the left to the right in next to no time, ensuring an optimum view of all traffic and working areas at all times. With this mowing combination it is even possible to carry out three operations in one pass.

The Unimog U 427 L which will be on show outside will demonstrate its multifunctionality with a Schilling roll-off tipper and a Gmeiner automatic spreader. The roll-off tipper with a payload of 5.8 t is able to carry containers up to 6 m³. The vehicle can be converted for new applications in a matter of minutes.
