Mercedes-Benz Trucks and long-standing partner Econ Engineering have reached a remarkable milestone: the delivery of the 1,000th Mercedes-Benz Arocs gritter to Econ’s hire fleet. This achievement underscores more than 22 years of collaboration that has kept the UK’s roads safe through countless winter challenges.
The landmark vehicle, adorned in a striking blue celebratory livery, was supplied by Mercedes-Benz Trucks dealer Northside Truck & Van in Leeds. Equipped with the latest Econ Spargo gritter body, the Arocs joins a fleet of over 1,000 winter maintenance vehicles that collectively covered more than 247,800 miles of gritter routes last year alone.
A Partnership Built on Reliability and Innovation
Econ Engineering, the UK’s largest manufacturer of gritters and specialist winter maintenance equipment, has relied on Mercedes-Benz Trucks for more than two decades. The enduring partnership reflects a shared commitment to reliability, performance, and innovation in extreme conditions.
Jonathan Lupton, Managing Director of Econ Engineering, said:
“Reaching our 1,000th Mercedes-Benz hire gritter is a proud moment for everyone at Econ. It’s a testament to the strength of our partnership with Mercedes-Benz Trucks and Northside Truck & Van. Mercedes-Benz trucks deliver the reliability, flexibility and aftersales support that our customers demand from vehicles that have to perform in the toughest of conditions. Our hire customers rely on the quality and condition of our fleet, and this milestone underlines our continued investment in innovation and performance.”
At the heart of Econ’s winter service success is the Mercedes-Benz Arocs. Designed for the harshest environments, the Arocs features high ground clearance, an all-wheel-drive chassis from 4×4 to 8×8, and the latest OM 471 engine paired with PowerShift Advanced transmission. The result is unrivalled traction, precision, and dependability, even under the most extreme weather conditions.
Drivers benefit from the state-of-the-art Multimedia Cockpit Interactive 2, which combines a 12-inch instrument display, touchscreen controls, voice activation, and advanced safety systems—offering comfort, control, and safety on every route.

Recognising Excellence in Engineering
Heiko Selzam, Managing Director of Daimler Truck UK, added:
“Econ exemplifies excellence in engineering and innovation. Reaching the milestone of 1,000 chassis supplied is not only a significant achievement but also a reflection of the strong and collaborative relationship we’ve built over the last 22+ years. I look forward to continuing this valued partnership and supporting Econ with many more chassis in the years ahead.”
Martin Tordoff, Truck Sales Executive at Northside Truck & Van, said:
“At Northside, we are extremely proud to be one of Econ’s suppliers. Our long-standing relationship has been built on excellent aftersales support. Reaching the historic milestone of 1,000 chassis supplied is a testament to the strength of our partnership, and we look forward to supplying more chassis and continuing this great relationship for many years to come.”
