Mercedes-Benz-Nuremberg

The fourth DTM race of the 2014 season takes place this weekend at the Norisring in Nuremberg (June 28th-29th, 2014).

The circuit: The DTM has been a regular visitor to the Dutzendteich street circuit since 1984. The Norisring has the shortest track on the DTM calendar at just 2.3 km. The race is held over 83 laps, which equates to a total distance of 190.9 km.

Comments on the DTM race in Nuremberg

Christian Vietoris (25, Germany, Original-Teile Mercedes AMG C-Coupé):

  • joined the party on the podium in third place at the Norisring in 2013

“The Norisring always has a really unique atmosphere. The track has not been one of my favourites in the past, but in the meantime, I find that I’m doing better there with every year that passes. I finished in third place on the podium last season. The track has only a small number of turns but is still difficult to master. You have to be on your toes on every lap and there’s no room for error.”

Paul Di Resta (28, Scotland, DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé):

  • will be contesting his fifth DTM race at the Norisring since returning from F1

“My last race at the Norisring was several years ago, but I know the track very well from my time in the Formula 3 Euro Series as well as from my first four years in the DTM. So far, I’ve not had a lot of success at Nuremberg’s street circuit. The track appears to be quite straightforward with few turns but it’s not. Brakes in particular are put under a fair bit of stress on this short street circuit, but driver fitness too is often tested to the limits at the Norisring, since it can be very hot there in late June. In view of all these various factors, it’s always difficult to make a forecast about racing at the Norisring, but I think a good finish is possible with a bit of luck.”

Gary Paffett (33, England, EURONICS Mercedes AMG C-Coupé):

  • won at the Norisring in 2004 and 2005
  • started from pole position in Nuremberg in 2012

“I’ve got some fond memories of the Norisring – I’ve won races there in both Formula 3 and in the DTM. I’m a real fan of street circuits and so every year, I look forward to the race at the Dutzendteich track. The Nuremberg circuit represents a completely different challenge compared to the regular race tracks that make up the bulk of the racing calendar. Its special track characteristics and fantastic atmosphere make this race one of the absolute highlights of the year.”

Pascal Wehrlein (19, Germany, gooix Mercedes AMG C-Coupe):

  • qualified in fifth place for his first race in Nuremberg

“The DTM race in Nuremberg is one of the highlights on the racing calendar and is a lot of fun. The circuit requires a completely different driving style to a permanent track. The slightest contact with the wall can bring your race to a premature end. I’ve always done well there so far. I achieved my first podium in the Formula 3 Euro Series two years ago on this tough street circuit and qualified in fifth position last season for my first DTM race at the Norisring.”

Robert Wickens (25, Canada, FREE MAN’S WORLD Mercedes AMG C-Coupé):

  • was best-placed driver at the Norisring in 2013

“We can expect to face different challenges here at the Norisring as compared to the previous three race tracks we’ve raced on so far this season. Medium-fast and fast turns are the dominant features of the track layouts at Hockenheim, Oschersleben and Budapest. In Nuremberg, we’ll be racing on a street circuit that puts quite different demands on drivers and cars. I personally like the Norisring. The atmosphere in the paddock during the race weekend is really terrific, and what’s more, I’ve always finished in the points there so far. I was best-placed driver last year.”

Daniel Juncadella (23, Spain, Petronas Mercedes AMG C-Coupé):

  • was fourth last year at the Norisring

“I’m really looking forward to the Norisring. The track is unique in every way. Each year, thousands of fans flock to the Dutzendteich circuit to cheer us on and to get up close to the race action – and there’s plenty of action on this street circuit that punishes every little mistake a lot. I know the track well, as I’ve already competed there in the Formula 3 Euro Series. I even secured two podiums during my time in that series. I placed fourth in my first DTM race last year in Nuremberg and just missed another podium finish by a whisker.”

Vitaly Petrov (29, Russia, DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé):

  • is lining up for the first time at the Norisring

“This is my first race on the Nuremberg street circuit. My team-mates have told me a lot about the unique atmosphere at the Dutzendteich circuit and its challenging track. You have to get as close as possible to the barriers to post a fast lap there, and the slightest mistake can lead to not finishing. I already know what it feels like from the Monaco Formula 1 crash barrier jungle where you must also proceed with the utmost precision in order to be fast. I like a challenge, which is why I’m looking forward to my first race weekend in ‘Germany’s Monaco’.”

Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport:

“We’re off to the Norisring this weekend which is a classic circuit filled with tradition. The Norisring is unique on the DTM calendar due to its track characteristics, having just a few turns. We’ve had four weeks since the last race in Budapest to analyse the season’s first three races in minute detail and to put further measures in place to improve our performance. However, that does not happen overnight in the top echelons of motor racing, which is why we must continue to work hard to close the gap on our competitors so that we can live up to our expectations once again in the long term.”
