Affalterbach, Germany — For the first time in its 57-year history, Mercedes-AMG is independently developing an SUV, showcasing an electrifying leap into the future of high-performance vehicles. This full-size SUV, nicknamed “Born in Affalterbach,” will stand as a milestone for AMG, embodying the very first off-roader created entirely by AMG engineers. It’s built on the AMG.EA electric high-performance platform, designed exclusively for AMG’s in-house creations, and is set to begin its inaugural test drives this winter.
For decades, high-performance SUVs have defined Mercedes-AMG’s reputation in the global market. Since the introduction of the ML 55 AMG over 25 years ago, AMG has been a pioneer in the luxury off-roader segment, proving that high-performance capabilities and SUV practicality are not mutually exclusive. The debut of the ML 55 AMG marked a turning point, captivating customers and setting the foundation for what has grown into an iconic SUV lineup. Today, AMG’s impressive roster includes six distinct SUV models: the compact GLA and GLB, the versatile GLC and GLE, the luxurious GLS, and the groundbreaking EQE SUV. Topping the range is the legendary Mercedes-AMG G 63, a powerful symbol of the brand’s off-road legacy, with impressive energy consumption ratings and a commanding presence on any terrain.
The new all-electric SUV on the AMG.EA platform is not only a significant step forward in electrification but also a testament to Mercedes-AMG’s commitment to staying at the forefront of high-performance engineering. This vehicle marks the second all-electric model on the proprietary AMG.EA platform, signaling a profound evolution in AMG’s lineup and joining a distinguished family of fully developed Affalterbach models, including the iconic GT, SL, SLS, and the AMG GT’s earlier iterations. The innovative platform promises to deliver an unparalleled electric driving experience, harmonizing AMG’s signature performance and sound with the environmental benefits of an electric drivetrain.

Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and head of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach divisions, shared his enthusiasm for the project. “SUVs have been among our most popular models for many years. With the ‘Born in Affalterbach’ SUV, we are responding to this trend by offering our customers a truly captivating high-performance off-roader based on the AMG.EA platform,” Schiebe commented. “Our new high-performance architecture follows a clear philosophy: ‘AMG First, EV Second.’ This means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.”
The AMG.EA platform, designed to deliver peak performance, promises to create an entirely new segment of electric off-roaders that retain AMG’s famed blend of power, dynamism, and emotional driving experience. Through the platform’s architecture, Mercedes-AMG has constructed an electric vehicle that does not compromise on AMG’s values, ensuring that drivers will still feel the adrenaline-fueled exhilaration AMG is known for, even in a zero-emission format. This platform is expected to raise the bar for future electric SUVs, making AMG’s high-performance pedigree accessible to a new generation of environmentally-conscious, performance-driven drivers.
As Mercedes-AMG embarks on this historic journey, it is clear that the “Born in Affalterbach” electric SUV is set to redefine the luxury SUV experience. This ambitious project embodies AMG’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive engineering, bridging the gap between traditional performance and electric innovation, and continuing the storied legacy of one of the world’s most revered high-performance brands.
