Last weekend, a groundbreaking motorsport event illuminated the night sky at the breathtaking Anglesey Circuit Trac Môn. Organised by Mission Motorsport – The Forces Motorsport Charity in collaboration with the circuit, the event marked the UK’s first-ever non-competitive track driving experience held entirely in darkness on an unlit track. Central to the event’s success was the participation of Mazda MX-5s from both the Mazda UK press fleet and the Mazda UK Heritage Fleet, including the iconic 30th Anniversary Model.
A Unique Night at the Track
Drivers gathered under a crisp, moonlit January sky to tackle the circuit’s full 2.1-mile International layout. With a dry track offering ideal conditions, the event provided an exhilarating and immersive experience, reminiscent of the nocturnal challenges faced in 24-hour endurance races.
The Mazda MX-5, renowned for its precise handling and engaging driver feedback, proved to be the perfect companion for this unconventional Friday night adventure. UK media drivers piloted standard, road-ready MX-5s alongside an eclectic mix of race cars, modified track machines, and sports cars.
Commenting on the event’s unique appeal, James Cameron, CEO of Mission Motorsport, remarked:
“This first-of-a-kind event offered drivers the rare opportunity to experience night driving on an unlit circuit and develop their skills in no-light conditions. It’s a sensation typically reserved for participants in 24-hour races or our Race of Remembrance here in Anglesey.”

Mazda’s Contribution Beyond the Track
The event coincided with a milestone moment for Trac Môn Anglesey Circuit, which signed the Armed Forces Covenant, a public commitment to support the UK’s armed forces community. Mazda’s involvement extended beyond track driving, with the Mazda MX-30 R-EV ‘poppy art car’, designed by Mission Motorsport, taking a lap of honour while also assisting in plug-in hybrid safety training for circuit marshals.
Thrills in the Darkness
As drivers navigated the undulating terrain of Anglesey Circuit in pitch-black conditions, the Mazda MX-5’s agility and responsiveness came to life, delivering an unforgettable driving experience. For many participants, the absence of visual references heightened their reliance on the car’s tactile feedback and their own instincts—a test of skill and composure rarely encountered outside endurance racing.
A Memorable Collaboration
This event underscored the versatility and appeal of the Mazda MX-5 while showcasing Mission Motorsport’s commitment to innovation and inclusion in motorsport. From the joyful expressions of journalists to the symbolic signing of the Armed Forces Covenant, it was a night to remember for all involved.
As James Cameron aptly put it, this pioneering event allowed participants to “step into the shoes” of endurance racers, if only for a night—an experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression and set the stage for more thrilling night events in the future.
