Mazda Motor Corporation has reached a major milestone: cumulative global production and sales of the Mazda CX-5 have surpassed five million units as of the end of 2025. This achievement makes the CX-5 the third Mazda model to cross the five-million mark, joining the ranks of the Mazda 323 and Mazda3.

First introduced in 2011, the Mazda CX-5 has grown into Mazda’s global best-seller, reaching customers in more than 100 countries and regions. Its enduring appeal ensured that in 2025, the CX-5 not only topped global sales for the brand but also claimed the title of the UK’s best-selling Mazda.

Koichiro Yamaguchi, Programme Manager for the Mazda CX-5, said: “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all customers and fans around the world who have supported the CX-5. Going forward, the all-new CX-5 further refines the sporty design and driving dynamics of this award-winning SUV. Meticulously focused on daily usability, it has evolved into a new-generation SUV that makes driving more comfortable. We will continue to nurture the CX-5 carefully, aiming for it to be cherished for years to come.”

The CX-5 has a rich history of accolades and innovation. The first-generation model made its world premiere at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, earned the title of Japan Car of the Year in 2012, and reached one million units produced by April 2015. The second-generation, unveiled at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, has held the distinction of Mazda’s global best-selling car since 2018.

Mazda CX-5 Passes Five-Million Global Sales Ahead of All-New Model Launch

In the UK, the CX-5 was introduced in 2012 as the first production car to feature Mazda’s Kodo “Soul of Motion” design philosophy and Skyactiv engine technology. The combination of style, driver appeal, and practicality made it an instant success, and subsequent updates in 2015, 2017, and 2022 only strengthened its position. With total UK sales surpassing 105,073 units by the end of 2025, the CX-5 has consistently proven its popularity with British SUV buyers.

Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director of Mazda Motors UK, said: “The Mazda CX-5 is an incredibly important car in Mazda’s history. From the launch of the original car in 2012, it has been a hugely popular choice for UK SUV buyers, who have loved its style, quality, and driver engagement. It’s incredible to see how much the UK market has changed since its launch, with SUVs now dominating the roads. The success of the CX-5 established Mazda as a maker of genuinely sporty SUVs that deliver class-leading quality and high levels of standard equipment.”

Looking ahead, the third-generation Mazda CX-5, revealed in July 2025, will arrive in the UK this summer. Designed to build on its predecessors’ strengths, the all-new model promises refined driving dynamics, a stylish and modern design, and the daily usability that has made the CX-5 a favourite among drivers worldwide. Thomson added: “Our dealers and customers are excited for the arrival of the all-new Mazda CX-5 this summer. It will continue to form a key part of our SUV line-up, offering customers a wide choice depending on their motoring needs.”

Since production began at Hiroshima’s Ujina Plant Number 2 in 2011, Mazda has expanded CX-5 manufacturing to Ujina Plant Number 1, Hofu Plant in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and China for domestic sales. Local assembly in Malaysia and Vietnam further extended its global reach, underscoring the CX-5’s role as Mazda’s flagship SUV.

As the CX-5 steps into its third generation, the five-million milestone is both a testament to its global popularity and a reminder of Mazda’s commitment to crafting SUVs that blend style, performance, and practicality.
