A record-breaking number of aspiring racers has put the 2023 MasterDrive Driver Search on track to be its most competitive year yet. From an impressive 195 initial entries, just 15 hopefuls remain in the running for this life-changing opportunity, with that number set to drop further to five in the coming weeks. Ultimately, only one driver will secure the coveted spot to race at the Simola Hillclimb.

Opening Doors in a Traditionally Exclusive Sport

The goal of the MasterDrive Driver Search has always been clear: to bring motorsport within reach for individuals who ordinarily lack the resources or connections to enter the field. According to Eugene Herbert, CEO of MasterDrive, this objective lies at the heart of the initiative.

“While there is a burning passion for motorsport, many face substantial barriers to entry—whether financially or due to limited opportunities,” says Herbert. “The exclusivity of motorsport often equates to many missed opportunities to develop talented drivers. MasterDrive Driver Search continues to bridge this gap, providing a pathway for talented individuals who might otherwise never have the chance to pursue their motorsport dreams.”

Expanding Reach and Diversity

Now in its third year, the MasterDrive Driver Search has not only expanded in sheer numbers but also in the diversity of its participants. Eugene ‘Gino’ Nourse, General Manager of Coastal Regions, highlights the growing national recognition and the surge in both participation and enthusiasm:

“It also successfully achieves a core objective which is to expand and include a national representation of drivers. This year’s group brings together passionate motorsport enthusiasts from across the country. Additionally, it shows the passion for the sport with many entrants sharing a common ardour. Most were introduced to motorsport through fathers and older brothers. An encouraging development is the significant surge in female participation. Significantly more females entered compared to previous years. This is a positive shift in a traditionally male-dominated sport.”

This widening appeal points to the importance of initiatives like the MasterDrive Driver Search in leveling the playing field and opening the door to motorsport for all, irrespective of background, geographic location, or gender.

The Path to the Finish Line

With the top 15 already identified, the next phase involves selecting the final five. These finalists will undergo a bespoke training and evaluation process, culminating in the selection of a single winner.

According to Herbert, candidates will be tested on various aspects, including their ability to handle the pressure of a knockout phase and their aptitude behind the wheel.

“Those successfully progressing to the next round can expect the journey to intensify. Candidates will face brief interviews as part of the knockout phase. All those that were interviewed must keep an eye on their communications to be sure they do not miss contact from the team.”

Once selected, the finalists will dive into theoretical sessions and practical training—some of which will involve time on the track—to ensure the winner is fully prepared to join the Simola Hillclimb team.

A Growing Legacy

Year after year, the MasterDrive Driver Search continues to reinforce its position as a key player in shaping the future of South African motorsport.

“The growing number of applicants each year serves as a powerful testament to the significance and impact of the MasterDrive Driver Search,” says Nourse. “It plays a vital role in increasing access to motorsport, proving that talent knows no boundaries—whether geographical, financial, or gender-based.”

Stay Tuned for Updates

With anticipation at an all-time high, the MasterDrive team will share updates on the selection process via all major social media platforms. As five turn into one, the suspense builds towards crowning a new champion—one whose determination and passion will be rewarded with an opportunity to race at one of South Africa’s most prestigious motorsport events.

To follow the action and stand by for the big reveal, keep an eye on MasterDrive’s social media channels. It’s an exciting reminder that with the right support, the fastest path to motorsport glory can be open to anyone with the talent—and the drive—to succeed.
