McLaren, one of the most illustrious names in motorsports, is set to celebrate a significant milestone. Nearly 50 years after securing its first Formula 1 World Championships, McLaren will honor its storied racing legacy with a special event at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, on August 16, 2024. This celebration will not only pay tribute to the past but also look forward to the future with exciting new announcements and showcases.
1974: A Landmark Year
The year 1974 is etched in McLaren’s history as a pivotal moment. Brazilian driver Emerson Fittipaldi became the team’s first Formula 1 World Drivers’ Champion, achieving this feat as the youngest champion at the time. Alongside his teammate, Denny Hulme, Fittipaldi also delivered McLaren’s first World Constructors’ Championship. This double victory validated the team’s dedication and purpose, coming just four years after the tragic loss of founder Bruce McLaren.
Fittipaldi’s success was marked by three race wins during the 1974 season, with Hulme adding a victory at the season-opening Argentinian Grand Prix. Their combined efforts brought McLaren its inaugural Constructors’ Championship, setting the stage for the team’s future dominance.
McLaren M23: A Symbol of Success
To commemorate this historic achievement, McLaren will display the 1974 title-winning McLaren M23 Formula 1 car at The Quail. The M23, driven by Fittipaldi, is one of McLaren’s most successful designs, with 16 Grand Prix wins and another World Drivers’ Championship secured by James Hunt in 1976. The car’s presence at Monterey Car Week will be a poignant reminder of McLaren’s enduring legacy in motorsports.
Showcasing Modern Craftsmanship
In addition to celebrating its past, McLaren will highlight its current excellence in supercar craftsmanship. The event will feature the McLaren 750S with the exclusive 3-7-59 Theme, which celebrates McLaren’s Triple Crown of Motorsport victories at the 1974 Indianapolis 500, the 1984 Monaco Grand Prix, and the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours. This theme, revealed in November 2023, showcases McLaren’s dedication to blending its rich racing heritage with cutting-edge design and technology.

Honoring Ayrton Senna’s Legacy
This year also marks 30 years since the passing of the legendary Ayrton Senna, and McLaren will honor his memory with the McLaren Senna featuring the Senna Sempre Livery. Unveiled at the Monaco Grand Prix, this unique car, hand-painted by McLaren Special Operations, is a bold tribute to Senna’s impact on and off the track. The car will make its North American debut at The Quail, displayed alongside two of Senna’s race-driven Formula 1 cars.
Looking to the Future: McLaren Trophy America
In a forward-looking move, McLaren announced the inaugural McLaren Trophy America championship, set to begin in 2025. This 10-round championship will feature bespoke McLaren race cars, offering competitive racing opportunities for amateur GT drivers and aspiring professionals. The series will include prestigious venues such as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Circuit of the Americas. An exciting development for the series will be unveiled at The Quail, further solidifying McLaren’s commitment to its racing heritage and future success.
Michael Leiters, Chief Executive Officer of McLaren Automotive, reflects on the brand’s enduring legacy: “50 years on from our first world championship win, we continue to be inspired by our history of racing through the ages. Today, we compete in Formula 1, GT racing, IndyCar, Formula E, Extreme E, and in the virtual world, and every supercar we create is with a continuation of this racing heritage. The expansion of this with McLaren Trophy America in 2025 only proves our commitment to making more history on track.”
As McLaren celebrates its 50th anniversary of racing excellence, the event at The Quail will be a testament to the brand’s storied past and its promising future. From the historic victories of 1974 to the innovative supercars of today, McLaren’s legacy continues to inspire and shape the world of motorsports.
