In a strategic move aimed at reinforcing its global presence and expanding its portfolio, Hillcrest Technologies Ltd, the parent company of Lifeline Fire & Safety Systems Ltd, has announced the acquisition of the assets of S.P.A Design UK. This acquisition is set to further solidify Lifeline’s status as the world leader in motorsport safety products while enabling access to new markets in motorsport, defence, and the niche vehicle sector.

For over three decades, S.P.A Design UK has been a renowned name in the field of fire suppression, motorsport services, and safety solutions. By bringing the company under the Lifeline umbrella, the acquisition provides a unique opportunity for Lifeline to enhance its product offerings, combining expertise and innovation from both companies.

A Milestone in Motorsport Safety
The acquisition represents more than just business expansion for Lifeline—it is a homecoming of sorts for Jim Morris, Managing Director and owner of Lifeline, who began his career at S.P.A Design over 35 years ago. Reflecting on the acquisition, Morris expressed his respect for the legacy of S.P.A Design and its founder, Richard Barnes. “I have always held high regard for S.P.A Design,” Morris said. “Bringing the S.P.A Design brand into the Lifeline group means we can build on the excellent foundations created by Richard to further develop our product range and markets in line with our growth strategy.”

This integration promises to enhance Lifeline’s already expansive range of motorsport safety products, which includes industry-leading fire suppression systems, driver harnesses, and other essential components designed to safeguard motorsport professionals in high-pressure environments. By incorporating S.P.A Design’s knowledge and assets, Lifeline is well-positioned to extend its reach into related industries, notably defence and niche automotive sectors where safety and reliability are paramount.

Legacy and Innovation: A Harmonious Transition
Richard Barnes, the founder of S.P.A Design, also shared his thoughts on the acquisition, describing the move as a fitting continuation of the brand’s journey. “Having known Jim when he worked for us in the early 90s, developing our first range of fire suppression products, it seems very fitting that I should pass on the baton to Jim and his team,” said Barnes. “I know the brand I created will be in safe hands and look forward to seeing it further grow and develop.”

This continuity, bridging decades of innovation in motorsport safety, underscores the significance of the acquisition—not just for the two companies involved, but for the industry as a whole. With Morris and Barnes at the helm during key moments of motorsport safety product development, the combined expertise from both companies will likely foster further advancements in fire suppression technologies and other critical safety systems.

Expanding into New Frontiers
One of the most notable aspects of the acquisition is Lifeline’s access to new markets. While Lifeline’s motorsport products are already used globally by professional teams and racing enthusiasts, the addition of S.P.A Design’s assets opens doors to markets in defence and niche vehicles—sectors where the demand for high-performance safety solutions is growing.

The synergy between Lifeline and S.P.A Design creates exciting possibilities for new product lines that could redefine safety standards in not only motorsport but also military applications and specialised vehicle markets. By leveraging S.P.A Design’s expertise and longstanding reputation, Lifeline is positioned to become a dominant force across multiple industries.

The acquisition of S.P.A Design UK by Hillcrest Technologies Ltd marks a significant chapter in the evolution of motorsport safety. For Jim Morris and Lifeline Fire & Safety Systems, it is a full-circle moment—returning to the roots of a career in fire suppression and motorsport safety while looking ahead to new opportunities and challenges. The collaboration between these two storied companies not only strengthens their position in the motorsport world but also signals an exciting expansion into new sectors, driven by innovation, experience, and a shared commitment to excellence.

With both companies’ legacies now intertwined, the future of motorsport and automotive safety looks brighter than ever.
