Classic car enthusiasts in Gauteng and Pretoria are eagerly preparing for the highlight of the year: the 42nd edition of Cars in the Park, scheduled for August 4, 2024, at Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria. This much-anticipated event promises to be a spectacular gathering, featuring over 2,500 classic and vintage cars alongside a charming selection of motorcycles. More than 100 car clubs have reserved special areas around the circuit, with a focus this year on pre-World War Two classics, vintage, and veteran cars dating from the early 1900s to the early 1940s.
Emil Kuschke from the Pretoria Old Motor Club (POMC), responsible for organizing the special invite cars, explains the historical significance: “The onset of World War Two in 1939 redirected all efforts towards military transport, setting a natural boundary for the showcased models.” While predominantly pre-war vehicles will be featured, exceptions may include a few early 1940s models, particularly from American production continuing into the war years.
Frik Kraamwinkel, chief organizer at POMC, notes unprecedented interest from stall holders and clubs, with over 140 vendors expected. The event aims to attract up to 10,000 visitors and will feature special attractions like a mini rally stage on the Zwartkops karting circuit. Improved parking and access routes, including exits on the Erasmia Road side, enhance visitor convenience, with traditional access via the R55 between Kyalami and Laudium.
This year, the event commemorates several automotive milestones, including the 60th anniversary of the Ford Mustang and the centenary of Chrysler, founded in 1924 and established formally in 1925. Chrysler’s legacy in South Africa includes iconic models like the Valiant, a favorite among enthusiasts from the mid-1960s to early 1970s, renowned for its robust six-cylinder engines and smooth Torqueflite automatic transmissions.
Also celebrating a significant anniversary is Fiat, marking 125 years in 2024. The Fiat club plans a substantial presence, highlighting the performance-oriented Abarth brand, known for its dominance in rallying during the early 1980s with models like the 131.
The Ford Mustang, initially launched in 1964, quickly set global records and remains a symbol of automotive prowess, recently achieving notable success in the Le Mans 24 Hour endurance race. Available in South Africa since 2015 in right-hand-drive, the Mustang continues to captivate enthusiasts worldwide.
Kraamwinkel emphasizes the event’s inclusive spirit: “These anniversaries add a special focus to each year’s show, complemented by representation from over 100 clubs, each showcasing their cherished vehicles.” Non-club classic car owners of vehicles 30 years and older enjoy complimentary entry, underscoring the event’s celebration of South Africa’s diverse automotive heritage.
The Cars in the Park event opens its gates at Zwartkops at 6 am for car owners, with display vehicles required to arrive by 8:30 am. General public admission begins at 8:30 am, with festivities concluding at 4 pm. Tickets are available via iTickets, priced at R120 for adults; children under 12 enter free. Gate sales are R140 for adults.
