KGM Motors UK has taken a decisive step in its electrification journey with the launch of its next-generation Dual Tech Hybrid powertrain, now available in the new Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid. Designed to deliver a driving experience as close as possible to a full electric vehicle, while retaining the long-range capability, durability and towing confidence expected of a KGM SUV, the new system represents a major evolution for the brand formerly known as SsangYong.
Developed in collaboration with BYD, a global leader in electrified powertrain technology, the Dual Tech Hybrid System pairs a newly designed 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an advanced e-DHT hybrid transmission and in-series dual motors. The result is a highly efficient, refined and versatile series-parallel hybrid system engineered specifically for real-world UK driving conditions.
At the heart of the system is a new-generation petrol engine operating on the Miller cycle to improve thermal efficiency. A variable geometry turbocharger ensures responsive performance across the rev range, while increased fuel injection pressure, now raised to 350 bar, enhances combustion efficiency for improved power delivery and reduced emissions. Advanced cylinder-block coatings further boost durability, allowing the engine to cope effortlessly with the frequent start-stop cycles inherent to hybrid operation.
In this configuration, the engine produces 149.6PS and 220Nm of torque and often works primarily as a high-efficiency generator, supplying energy to the motors and battery rather than directly driving the wheels. This approach is central to delivering the smooth, near-silent feel typically associated with electric vehicles.
The Dual Tech Hybrid System is built around Korea’s first P1 + P3 dual-motor architecture, derived from BYD’s proven plug-in hybrid technology and adapted by KGM for full hybrid use. A high-output 130kW P3 drive motor, mounted close to the drive shaft, delivers instant throttle response and strong, linear acceleration. Producing up to 177PS and 300Nm of torque, it provides the effortless overtaking performance drivers expect from an electrified SUV.
Supporting this is a class-leading 1.83kWh hybrid battery, the largest in its segment, paired with a lightweight 12V LFP low-voltage system. Together, they enable extended electric-only driving and more effective energy recovery, enhancing efficiency in everyday use.
The bespoke e-DHT electrified Dual Hybrid Transmission allows the system to operate seamlessly across a wide range of conditions. It supports pure EV driving, series hybrid operation where the engine functions mainly as a generator, and parallel hybrid or direct engine drive modes for higher speeds and heavier loads. Crucially, the system can charge the battery while simultaneously powering the wheels electrically, optimising energy use without driver intervention.
In total, the powertrain automatically switches between nine operating modes, including EV mode, HEV mode and engine drive mode. Whether navigating urban traffic, cruising on the motorway or tackling hilly routes, the system continuously selects the most efficient configuration, delivering a smooth, quiet and confidence-inspiring drive.
Drivers can monitor this process via a clear energy flow display in the instrument cluster, which shows in real time how power is being distributed between the engine, motors and battery, as well as when regenerative braking is active.
All-electric driving is possible at speeds of up to 62mph, creating a calm, near-silent environment with instant torque and seamless acceleration. At higher speeds, the petrol engine and electric motor work together to provide strong performance and efficient long-distance cruising.
Efficiency is further enhanced by an adjustable regenerative braking system with three selectable levels, allowing drivers to tailor the braking feel. Smart Regenerative Braking goes a step further by automatically adjusting deceleration based on traffic ahead, smoothing progress in stop-start conditions while maximising energy recovery.
To ensure refinement matches the advanced powertrain, both Torres Hybrid and Actyon Hybrid feature extensive sound insulation throughout the body and cabin. Smart frequency dampers on the suspension improve ride comfort and body control across a wide range of road surfaces, while keeping noise and vibration to a minimum.
Commenting on the launch, Kevin Griffin, Managing Director of KGM Motors UK, said the new system clearly signals the brand’s direction in the UK market. It delivers the quiet, smooth character customers associate with electric vehicles, combined with the practicality and robustness that define KGM SUVs, forming the foundation for the brand’s next generation of electrified powertrains.
Available now, the Torres Hybrid starts from £35,995 for the K40, while the Actyon Hybrid is priced from £38,995. Both models reflect KGM’s 70-plus-year Korean heritage while offering a comprehensive suite of driver assistance, safety and convenience features as standard. The Actyon Hybrid builds on the Torres Hybrid specification with premium touches such as a 360-degree camera, suede interior, noise-cancelling tyres, a distinctive hexagon steering wheel and a hands-free power tailgate, reinforcing its position as the more luxurious option in the range.
