Keith Haring Artists, Gay and Aids Victim

Keith HaringToday on the 4th of March 2012 Google is celebrating the birthday of Keith Haring. He died of Aids related complications at the age of 31 on February 16, 1990. Keith Harding was born in the United States of America but his legacy extends worldwide. Keith Haring’s work is now synonymous with the New York City. His murals and characters can be seen everywhere from the FDR drive in New York to Sesame Street, and most can recognize his distinctive style, even if they don’t know his name.

He is also a renowned international artists as can be seen in Australia where will find some of his graffiti and murals in Melbourne which he painted in 1984.

Keith Haring always thought of himself as a funny-looking kid, which might be why kids all over the world responded to him. In April 1986, Keith Haring opened the Pop Shop, a retail store in Soho selling T-shirts, toys, posters, buttons and magnets bearing his images. Keith said, “I found out that I can make any kid smile. It’s probably from having a funny face to begin with – and looking and acting like a kid. And kids can relate to my drawings, because of the simple lines.”

Throughout his career, Keith Haring devoted much of his time to public works, which often carried social messages. He produced more than 50 public artworks between 1982 and 1989, in dozens of cities around the world, many of which were created for charities, hospitals, children’s day care centers and orphanage.
