A Concours-level restoration of a 1967 Pontiac GTO will star alongside the latest McLaren, Aston Martin and Lamborghini exotica

A Festival of Passion. That’s how the organisers are describing the excitement surrounding The Classic Car Show which will host over 1 500 classic cars and motorcycles at the Nasrec Expo Centre on Sunday, March 3.

“We’ve already had 1 500 people who’ve submitted their registration forms for our show, making it one of the biggest single-day car events in Africa,” says organiser Paulo Calisto.

Classic Car Show 2013

The event will be the second show hosted by www.ClassicCars.co.za and Rolling Thunder, the Robertsham-based muscle-car restoration experts. The first show held last year in October drew over 22 000 spectators and Paulo Calisto and Rolling Thunder’s Mark Groenewald are confident that figure will easily be exceeded.

Rolling Thunder have commissioned Hall 10 at the Nasrec Centre to house their display of over 90 cars, headed up by the brilliant Pontiac GTO, which is featured in this month’s Car Magazine. Another firm that has committed to The Classic Car Show is the Daytona exotic car dealership from Sandton, which will be bringing two Lamborghinis, some Aston Martins and a McLaren supercar. Ferraris and Porsches are also going to be providing modern eye-candy at the event.

“The show is very family orientated too, and this year we will have various entertainments going on all day,” says Paulo Calisto. We have laid on the following:

  • Helicopter rides, which will enable people to have flips taking in the area and getting great aerial views of the show. Prices for this will be R150 per person, per flip
  • A mechanical bull
  • A mini theme park, using many of the rides traditionally used at Nasrec shows
  • Rock band Ballyhoo
  • Elvis impersonator Charl van Tonder and his backing band, all of them with big Elvis-style sideburns
  • Morgan Beat Box, who entertained the crowds last year with his unique vocal range of strange noises
  • Gift boxes presented to car owners with cars exhibiting the most passion for “petrolheadonism”

“The clubs are supporting us too, and one of our headline displays will be from the Jaguar Club, whose British line-up of classics will provide an interesting contrast to all the glamour of the muscle-cars and chromed ‘50s classics,” said Calisto.

An interesting club that is attending will be the Soweto-based Corolla Club, catering to Toyota Corlla’s built before 1980. The Mini Club will also be attending en-masse, as will the ever-enthusiastic Volvo Club, which has a wonderful history of support for such events.

At the first Classic Car Show, some 300 motorcycles were in attendance, and on Sunday March 3 more are expected, as many riders have indicated they will make the show a priority stop after the Impala Rally, which is being held that same weekend.

Admission will be at Gate Two only, and drivers of classic cars and one passenger will be admitted free, although additional passengers will have to pay

The Classic Car Show will open its doors at the Nasrec Expo Centre, south west of Johannesburg, at 8 am to petrolheads on Sunday March 3, 2013. Exhibitors who want to bring their special show cars the night before will be catered for with special parking and security.

Admission will be R60 for adults, while children under 12 will have free entry. Anyone driving a classic car will also be admitted free as well as one adult passenger, but additional adult passengers will have to pay the full admission fee.

The Nasrec Expo Centre is located to the east of the N1 Highway, close to Soccer City, on Rand Show Road, Nasrec. (GPS – S26° 14.810’ E27° 58.695’).
