The Gauteng Boat Retailers Association has recognised two personalities for their contribution to the boating industry in South Africa. Both were awarded Lifetime Achievement Awards by the association at the opening ceremony of the Johannesburg Boat Show at Nasrec last night (Thursday).

Erwin Bursik, a high profile Springbok deep sea fishing authority associated with Ski-Boat Magazine for the past 28 years, and Godfrey Castle, publisher of four out-door related magazines, including Leisure Boating Magazine, were recognised with the awards for contributions that each extend over four decades.

Erwin Bursik has Springbok colours for game fishing and also obtained Protea colours for his fishing exploits in Kenya. Since 1974 he has been involved in the administration of off-shore fishing in Southern Africa. He has written countless reviews on boats for his magazine and his opinion is widely sought after by boat manufacturers in this country. He is noted for his exceptional catches over the years including a Black Marlin that weighed over 340 kg!

Godfrey Castle is part of a Cape Town-based publish dynasty that extends back over 60 years. His father Norman started Caravan Magazine back in 1960 and Godfrey took over the reins of the business in the 1980s, extending the publishing bouquet to four magazines, including a 4X4 magazine and, notably, the successful Leisure Boating Magazine.

Godfrey’s award was accepted by his son Dean, currently the Editor of Leisure Boating, and well-respected in the boating industry.
