In a remarkable blend of innovation and practicality, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has introduced a new member to its Coventry EV build and test facility: a robotic canine named ‘Rover’. This advanced four-legged robot, developed by Boston Dynamics, is set to play a pivotal role in the luxury vehicle manufacturer’s ambitious plan to electrify its entire range of brands by 2030.

The introduction of Rover comes as JLR ramps up its battery testing operations in preparation for the launch of the Range Rover Electric. In the highly complex and energy-dense environment of the testing facility, Rover’s role is both critical and multifaceted. Acting as a vigilant patrol unit, Rover conducts up to 24 inspections each day, ensuring that high-tech equipment remains in optimal condition and that potential issues are detected early.

Equipped with a 50V battery that allows it to operate continuously without the need for rest, Rover’s capabilities extend far beyond those of a traditional guard dog. Its ability to autonomously navigate through the facility—opening doors, climbing stairs, and monitoring high-traffic areas—ensures a thorough and consistent inspection process. The robot’s advanced sensors allow it to detect gas leaks and measure battery temperatures with precision, providing valuable data that helps JLR engineers maintain a safe working environment and improve the overall efficiency of their operations.

Jlr Integrates Robotic Canine Rover To Boost Battery Testing Efficiency Ahead Of Range Rover Electric Launch

Gonzalo Ejarque-Rinaldini, PhD in Automation and Robotics at JLR, underscores the significance of such innovations within the company’s broader Reimagine strategy. “Collaborations with industry leaders like Boston Dynamics are instrumental in our mission to electrify our Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar brands by 2030,” Ejarque-Rinaldini explains. “Robotics solutions like Rover not only enhance the safety and productivity of our engineers but also contribute to the superior quality of the EV battery technology we produce.”

Rover’s deployment is a key part of JLR’s £18 billion investment in robotics and advanced manufacturing processes. The use of plasma cleaning robots at the Lyons Park facility, for instance, demonstrates JLR’s commitment to cutting-edge technology, as these robots remove microscopic dust particles from battery cells to ensure flawless bonding.

Looking ahead, JLR is exploring the potential for deploying a fleet of robotic quadrupeds across its global facilities. This strategic expansion aims to further refine and accelerate the production processes for future models, including the upcoming Range Rover Electric and a new era for Jaguar as a pure-electric luxury brand.

As JLR continues to invest in technological advancements and sustainable practices, the integration of Rover and similar innovations reflects a forward-thinking approach to automotive manufacturing—one that combines efficiency, safety, and cutting-edge technology to drive the future of electric vehicles.
