Johannesburg, South Africa, 31 March 2026 – Imagine Indiana Jones, but swapping the horse for a Jeep® Wrangler Rubicon and trading ancient temples for Africa’s wild terrains. That’s the essence of Waleed Al Shamsi’s one-year overland journey from the UAE to South Africa, a testament to adventure, endurance, and the rugged capability of the Jeep Wrangler.
Al Shamsi’s route was no leisurely sightseeing tour. He faced deep mud in Uganda and Zambia, soft dunes in the Namib Desert, jagged rocky roads in Ethiopia and Angola, and long stretches of highway across South Africa where stability and comfort mattered as much as off-road prowess. His Wrangler Rubicon, outfitted for long-distance overlanding, carried camping equipment, water storage, and a dual-battery system to support life on the road, turning the vehicle into a true mobile adventure base.
For Al Shamsi, the journey was never about checking countries off a map. It was about experiencing Africa in its raw, unpredictable beauty, meeting people, and exploring landscapes from the ground level. “I’ve always believed the best way to see the world isn’t from a plane, but from the ground, crossing borders and meeting people where they live. Africa is incredibly diverse in its landscapes, cultures and challenges, and I wanted to prove that with the right mindset and the right vehicle, it could be done,” he explains.
Janus Janse van Rensburg, Head of Product and Marketing at Jeep South Africa, a Stellantis South Africa brand, notes that Al Shamsi’s journey embodies the brand’s spirit. “Waleed’s story is important because it shows the Jeep brand in the kind of environment that built its reputation. Capability isn’t something you can claim from behind a desk. It’s recognised when a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon tackles demanding terrain, long distances and the unpredictability that comes with a journey like this.”
For South African adventurers, Al Shamsi’s route resonates strongly. The country’s rich overlanding culture, from Cape Town’s Chapman’s Peak to the Kruger region’s backroads, offered some of the most memorable moments of his journey, amplified by the warmth and hospitality he encountered along the way. “Owners often become the most convincing voices for the brand because they use their vehicles in real life, not ideal conditions,” says Janse van Rensburg. “That’s why a journey like this inspires community, advocacy, and the kind of Jeep ownership experience that encourages others to make their own stories.”
Al Shamsi’s African crossing closes one chapter and opens another as he prepares to explore South America. His story is a reminder that adventure doesn’t always need a grand plan—sometimes it begins with a capable vehicle, a bit of courage, and the curiosity to see what lies around the next turn. The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, once again, proves it’s ready to go anywhere and do anything.
