JAECOO is set to charge into South Africa’s fast-evolving electrified vehicle market with the imminent arrival of the J7 SHS, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the popular J7 SUV. Scheduled to launch next month, the J7 SHS marks a bold step in the brand’s local strategy, being the second model to wear the JAECOO badge in South Africa—and the first of several new-energy vehicles poised to follow.
Blending electric innovation with internal combustion efficiency, the J7 SHS is underpinned by JAECOO’s Super Hybrid System, which pairs a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor to deliver both spirited performance and exceptional fuel economy. This refined powertrain is linked to a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT) that ensures smooth, seamless power delivery in all driving conditions.
Daily Driving, Electrified
What truly sets the J7 SHS apart is its impressive 90 km all-electric range, made possible by an 18.3 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery. For most South African commuters, this means completing daily urban journeys—school runs, work commutes, and errands—without using a single drop of fuel or emitting tailpipe emissions.
And when longer trips call, the J7 SHS rises to the occasion with a combined range of up to 1,200 km. On a recent 1,100 km real-world test between Cape Town and Gqeberha, the hybrid SUV posted an average consumption of just 4.88 L/100 km, reaffirming its credentials as one of the most efficient vehicles in its class.
Charging is equally user-friendly. When connected to a 40 kW DC fast charger, the J7 SHS can replenish its battery from 30% to 80% in just 20 minutes—ideal for busy lifestyles and long-distance journeys alike.

Built for the Modern Motorist
“The J7 SHS represents a significant step forward for the JAECOO brand in South Africa,” says Shannon Gahagan, National Brand and Marketing Manager for OMODA & JAECOO South Africa. “It brings together performance, efficiency, and premium comfort in a way that meets the evolving needs of today’s drivers—whether they’re looking to reduce emissions, save on fuel, or simply enjoy the flexibility of an electrified drive.”
That premium comfort is delivered through a sumptuously appointed cabin swathed in leather and equipped with more than 15 advanced driver assistance features as standard. Highlights include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure alert, and rear cross-traffic assist with automatic braking.
While final specifications are yet to be confirmed, the J7 SHS is expected to feature a host of luxury and convenience features, including interior ambient lighting, 19-inch alloy wheels, a Sony eight-speaker premium sound system, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration.
A Glimpse at What’s to Come
The arrival of the J7 SHS is just the beginning. It will soon be joined by additional models in the JAECOO lineup, including the upcoming J5, as part of a broader strategy to introduce more electrified vehicles from the OMODA & JAECOO stable in South Africa.
With its combination of real-world EV usability, long-distance hybrid flexibility, and upmarket styling, the JAECOO J7 SHS is positioned to resonate strongly with eco-conscious, tech-savvy buyers looking for an SUV that doesn’t compromise on capability or class.
Local pricing and full specification details will be revealed in the coming weeks. But one thing is clear: with the J7 SHS, JAECOO is making a powerful statement about the future of premium mobility in South Africa.
