JAC Motors South Africa has once again broken new ground with the introduction of the world’s first right-hand-drive battery-electric X200 EV forward-cab. Expanding its leadership in the local Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) truck market, the new X200 EV 1.9-tonne provides a sustainable, cost-effective, and versatile solution tailored to the evolving logistics landscape.
A Sustainable Solution for Modern Logistics
The X200 EV is designed to meet today’s transport and logistics demands with eco-friendly efficiency. Ideal for fleet modernisation, this versatile vehicle supports global sustainability initiatives while significantly reducing operational costs. With a robust electric propulsion system, the X200 EV ensures zero emissions and instant torque, making it the perfect solution for last-mile urban deliveries.
The latest addition to JAC Motors’ X-Series line-up, the X200 EV builds on the brand’s reputation for affordability, reliability, and low ownership costs. Since the local launch of the X-Series in 2017, the range has consistently delivered superior performance, higher payload capacity, and enhanced specifications compared to rivals.
JAC Motors’ legacy in the commercial vehicle sector dates back to 1964. Expanding into passenger vehicles and bakkies in 2007, the company introduced battery-electric trucks in 2014. Following the success of the globally launched N75 EV 4-tonne truck in 2019—adopted by major logistics operators like Amazon and DHL—the new X200 EV further reinforces JAC Motors’ commitment to a zero-emissions future.
Advanced Electric Powertrain for Maximum Efficiency
Sharing technological advancements with the renowned N75 EV, the X200 EV is powered by a synchronous electric motor delivering 50 kW (105 kW peak power) and 140/300 Nm of torque. A 63.75 kWh lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery with a 200 Ah capacity ensures reliable performance and a driving range of up to 230 km, depending on load and traffic conditions.
The X200 EV supports European CCS2 AC and DC charging standards. A DC fast charger enables a 20% to 80% charge in just 35 minutes, with a full charge completed in 90 minutes. Regenerative braking technology further enhances efficiency by extending battery life and range.
According to Karl-Heinz Göbel, CEO of JAC Motors South Africa, the X200 EV offers transport operators significant savings. “The X200 EV delivers over 50% in fuel/energy cost savings compared to conventional vehicles and reduces maintenance costs by up to 70%, ensuring an optimised total cost of ownership.”
Robust Chassis for Safety and Versatility
Engineered for diverse applications, the X200 EV boasts a new heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis with rear integral bridge support. This advanced design, incorporating high-strength stamping and welding treatments, enhances durability and optimal axle weight distribution.
Unlike other X-Series models, the X200 EV features front and rear leaf spring suspension for improved stability under varying payload conditions. Measuring 5,300 mm (L) x 1,750 mm (W) x 1,990 mm (H) with a 3,100 mm wheelbase, the X200 EV supports a maximum payload of 1.9 tonnes. Its 5.75-metre turning radius and electric power steering offer superior manoeuvrability, even in tight urban environments.
Safety remains a priority, with large front disc brakes, rear drum brakes, and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) ensuring optimal stopping power. Additional safety features include ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), ESC (Electronic Stability Control), and HAS (Hill-Start Assist System), providing confidence in diverse driving conditions.

A Comfortable and Ergonomic Driving Experience
The X200 EV prioritises driver comfort and safety. Equipped with daytime running lights, rear fog lamps, and an elevated driving position, it enhances visibility, ease of entry and exit, and precision in tight spaces. The cab features crumple zones, side-impact protection bars, and a suite of seatbelt safety mechanisms, ensuring the well-being of occupants.
Interior features include an electronic instrument cluster, a Bluetooth-enabled touchscreen infotainment system, and USB connectivity. Practical storage options, including overhead compartments, further enhance convenience. The X200 EV’s ergonomic design is complemented by an Electronic Rotary Switch (ERS), multi-function steering wheel with Audio and Cruise Control, rear parking sensors, climate-controlled air-conditioning, electric windows, and fabric seats with headrests.
