Western Cape and Eastern Cape, 11 October 2024 – In a commendable move towards fostering environmental consciousness among the youth, ISUZU Motors South Africa has launched an initiative aimed at nurturing awareness about marine conservation among primary school learners in the Western and Eastern Cape. This initiative, executed in collaboration with renowned conservationist and filmmaker Zandile Ndhlovu, promises to impact thousands of young minds through the pages of her inspiring book, Zandi’s Song.

As South Africa grapples with low literacy rates at the primary school level, this initiative arrives at a crucial moment. Ndhlovu remarked, “It is an opportune moment to use a beautiful picture book to inspire reading as a hobby, and most importantly, expand narratives about the ocean, and raise awareness about ocean conservation. I’m incredibly honoured to partner with ISUZU on this mission, touching hearts and changing lives.” This sentiment highlights the dual purpose of the initiative: to promote literacy and to instil a sense of responsibility toward the environment.

A Focus on Education and Conservation
ISUZU will donate 3,000 copies of Zandi’s Song to Grade 1 to 4 learners across five primary schools, including Luleka Primary School in Khayelitsha, Sea Vista Primary School, and St Francis College in St. Francis Bay, with plans to extend the program to additional schools early in 2025. The book narrates a story centered on marine conservation and emphasizes the pressing need to combat plastic pollution. As South Africa’s first Black female freediving instructor, Ndhlovu engages directly with students, sharing her personal journey and challenging prevailing narratives about access to the ocean. Her goal is to cultivate a generation of ocean guardians committed to safeguarding marine environments.

In addition to the book donations, ISUZU will provide participating schools with recycling resources, including bins and refuse bags, to establish in-school recycling programs. This initiative also targets Grade 5 to 7 learners, who will watch an educational video about ocean conservation, further enhancing their understanding of environmental stewardship. Educational materials, such as workbooks, worksheets, and posters on recycling and pollution, will be supplied in partnership with the Pick n Pay School Club.

Commitment to Positive Impact
Mr. Lebogang Makoloi, ISUZU’s Department Executive for Corporate Affairs, emphasized the alignment of this initiative with ISUZU’s corporate values: “Zandi’s Song speaks to what ISUZU stands for—making a positive impact in society, with a focus on education, community, and conservation. Our Corporate Social Investment mandate, which aligns with our business strategy, advocates for initiatives that drive awareness among young children to care for the environment. We are proud to be part of this important cause.”

The principal of Sea Vista Primary School, Mr. Charles Coenraad, echoed the sentiments of gratitude: “The impact of this initiative will go a long way in educating our young learners about environmental conservation. The combination of storytelling, resources, and hands-on activities will help instil values of environmental responsibility from an early age.”

A Legacy of Sustainability
This initiative forms part of ISUZU’s broader commitment to sustainability and community upliftment. As the company celebrates 60 years of truck manufacturing and 45 years of bakkie production, it continues to build on its legacy as a leader not only in the automotive industry but also as a champion of environmental preservation and community development.

In a world where the need for environmental stewardship has never been more critical, ISUZU Motors South Africa is taking significant strides to educate and empower the next generation. Through this initiative, the company is not just fostering literacy and a love for reading but is also cultivating a deep-seated respect for the planet among the youth, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future.
