In Gqeberha, where community spirit often runs as deep as the coastline, a powerful collaboration continues to turn endurance sport into enduring social change. The ISUZU Foundation, a partnership between Isuzu Motors South Africa and its nationwide dealer network, has raised more than R200,000 for 13 children’s charities in Nelson Mandela Bay through its ongoing support of IRONMAN4theKidz.
Since 2022, the Foundation has worked closely with IRONMAN4theKidz, contributing over R1.8 million in total support. What makes the initiative particularly impactful is its shared-value model, where the ISUZU Foundation matches funds raised from every entry, effectively doubling the reach and resources directed toward vulnerable children in the region.
“Isuzu Motors South Africa is committed to creating a better life through better transport solutions, driving change and contributing to society in a way that creates value,” said Alastair Hodgson, Department Executive: Business Enablement. “Our role is to be a bridge, connecting people, supporting communities and enabling impact. We are proud of our partnership with IRONMAN4theKidz and together we celebrate a spirit of service that drives meaningful progress.”
Beyond the numbers, the initiative speaks to something far more human. Through the IRONMAN4theKidz Charity Trust, funding is channelled into programmes that create stability where it is often most fragile. Children benefit from access to education, daily nutrition, safe shelter, emotional care and structured developmental support. These interventions do more than meet immediate needs; they help rebuild confidence, restore dignity and open pathways toward a more secure future.
In communities where instability and limited resources can shape a child’s entire trajectory, the impact of sustained support becomes transformative. Safe spaces become learning environments, meals become anchors of consistency, and care becomes a foundation for growth rather than a privilege.
Gary Stephenson, co-founder of the IRONMAN4theKidz Trust, highlighted the importance of the partnership in extending that reach. “ISUZU Foundation plays a critical role in enabling us to expand our reach, ensuring we make a positive difference where it matters most. We are incredibly grateful for this longstanding partnership as we continue our commitment to positively influence the future trajectory of the children of South Africa.”
The initiative’s influence also extends onto the racecourse, where ISUZU-sponsored athletes have transformed personal endurance into purposeful advocacy. Thamsanqa Gompo, competing in the ISUZU IRONMAN African Championships, alongside Akhona Ketwa and Ruan Pretorius in the Corporate Triathlete Challenge, have helped amplify the campaign “Racing Beyond the Finish Line.” Their participation has drawn attention to the broader mission, using sport as a platform to spotlight the needs and potential of young people in South Africa.
What emerges from this partnership is not just a fundraising mechanism, but a sustained ecosystem of impact. One where corporate commitment, community engagement and athletic ambition intersect to create measurable change.
In Nelson Mandela Bay, that change is not abstract. It is present in classrooms that remain open, meals that are served with consistency, and children who are given the opportunity to imagine futures that extend beyond circumstance. Through continued collaboration, the ISUZU Foundation and IRONMAN4theKidz are proving that when purpose and partnership align, the finish line is only the beginning.
