Rolls-Royce Motor Cars reaffirms its enduring commitment to The March CE Primary School ahead of the 2024 Greenpower ‘Gathering of Goblins’, the UK’s premier event for electric-powered racing cars crafted by schoolchildren.
Organized by the Greenpower Education Trust, a UK-based charity dedicated to igniting enthusiasm for science and engineering, the competition challenges participants to design, construct, and race electric cars. Greenpower provides age-appropriate kit cars, fostering hands-on learning in schools, colleges, and community groups across the UK, culminating in national competitions and an international final. Over 10,000 students, spanning primary to university levels, participate in more than 700 teams nationwide, with similar programs extending into Europe and the USA.
At The March CE Primary School, located near Rolls-Royce’s iconic Goodwood headquarters, students in Years 5 and 6 engage in the ‘Formula Goblin’ category tailored for 9-11-year-olds. What began with sponsorship of one kit car for the school’s after-school STEM Club has blossomed into support for a fleet of four, reflecting the initiative’s popularity and impact.
While Greenpower provides standardized chassis and powertrain components to ensure fair competition, teams enjoy creative freedom in designing the cars’ bodywork. Collaborating closely with Rolls-Royce specialists, students transform their ideas into reality, inspired by the 2024 theme, ‘Elements’. Under the guidance of Rolls-Royce designers, children experience the full design process, from conceptual drawings to detailed digital renders, mirroring the craftsmanship behind Rolls-Royce’s luxury models and bespoke commissions.
Apprentices and interns from Rolls-Royce’s Goodwood facility play a pivotal role, supporting the STEM Club by integrating authentic Rolls-Royce materials into the cars and providing hands-on assistance in assembly. They also coach the teams in driving techniques, conduct test drives, and simulate pit-stop scenarios to prepare for the culminating race day.
On June 30, the teams will join peers at the Goodwood Motor Circuit, a stone’s throw from both The March CE Primary School and the Home of Rolls-Royce, showcasing their ingenuity and teamwork in a thrilling display of electric racing prowess.
