The INEOS Grenadier has embarked on its latest challenge, venturing 1,300 meters underground into the K+S potash mine in Zielitz, central Germany. This demanding environment is designed to test the vehicle’s endurance and performance under extreme conditions.
The salt-rich surroundings present a harsh test for any vehicle, but the Grenadier is well-equipped to handle the challenge. It boasts superior corrosion protection, with complete electrocoating, wax sealing in all cavities, and an external powder coating. This extensive protection is essential to withstand the mine’s corrosive conditions.
After undergoing over 1.1 million miles of rigorous testing and development, including temperatures as low as minus 35 degrees Celsius and altitudes exceeding 600 meters, INEOS remains confident in the Grenadier’s reliability and durability.
Lynn Calder, CEO of INEOS Automotive, emphasized the significance of this testing phase: “Extreme testing conditions are not new to the Grenadier as we really put it through its paces during development, but it’s great to work with partners around the world to showcase just how capable this 4X4 is on-road, off-road and now underground.”

The Zielitz mine, which spans 61 square kilometers and extracts approximately 45,000 tons of raw salt daily, presents a formidable testing ground. The Grenadier’s standard underbody protection, including front and rear guards and a fuel tank guard, is put to the test alongside its advanced corrosion-resistant features.
Combining British design ingenuity with German engineering excellence, the INEOS Grenadier is built for those who demand a robust, dependable vehicle that doesn’t compromise on modern comfort. Its foundation is a full box-section ladder frame chassis, complemented by heavy-duty solid beam axles, a two-speed transfer case, and up to three locking differentials. The Grenadier is powered by a BMW 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, available in both petrol and diesel variants, specifically calibrated for this tough application.
The Grenadier Station Wagon, Quartermaster pick-up, and Quartermaster Chassis Cab are all manufactured at the state-of-the-art Hambach factory in Moselle. This facility, acquired by INEOS Automotive in January 2021, employs 1,700 people and represents the pinnacle of modern automotive production.
With this latest phase of testing, the INEOS Grenadier continues to prove its capability and resilience, solidifying its reputation as a vehicle designed to conquer the toughest environments both above and below ground.
