Johannesburg, 19 November 2025 – The Vilaca Racing Time Attack Series brought its thrilling sixth season to a dramatic close this past weekend, delivering the kind of high-intensity competition that has solidified it as one of South Africa’s premier motorsport battlegrounds.
Spread across six events at circuits around the country, the series challenges drivers to extract the absolute maximum from man and machine. Each round features six to eight time-attack sessions, with competitors pushing for the fastest possible lap. But the real pressure arrives with the signature Vilaca shoot-out: the day’s three quickest drivers per class go head-to-head, each given just two laps to stake their claim on the podium. In this crucible of precision and nerve, milliseconds make champions.
Among this year’s standout competitors, Johan Nel etched his name into Vilaca Racing history by clinching the 2025 Modified Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) Championship—a triumph that required both relentless determination and technical mastery.
A Season That Nearly Slipped Away
Despite his eventual success, Nel’s season opened with unexpected adversity. His Hyundai i30N, while a strong platform, required extensive development to extract the performance needed at the sharp end of the field.
“We had a challenging start to the season with some teething issues with the development of the i30N package,” Nel explained. “As such, we were not able to compete in the shoot-out in the first three events.”
In a championship decided by razor-thin margins, missing out on early shoot-outs could have ended the campaign before it began. But once the team resolved the initial technical challenges and dialled in the modifications, the i30N’s potential came alive.

A Late-Season Charge to Glory
With the car finally performing at its peak, Nel unleashed a blistering second half of the season.
“The i30N is an extremely good base to start with, and after dialling in all the modifications, we had a very competitive car for the last three events,” he said. “We managed to win all three events and narrowly win the championship by 2 points. I would like to thank our main sponsor, Castrol, for their contribution to our success.”
Three consecutive victories and a photo-finish championship margin—proof of a season defined by resilience, precision, and perfectly timed momentum.
Racing and Leadership in Parallel
Nel’s achievement becomes even more extraordinary when viewed alongside his professional trajectory. In June, he stepped into the role of Sales Director at Hyundai Automotive South Africa, balancing high-level corporate leadership with high-stakes track competition.
“Racing in a car belonging to a company that I so dearly love is even more fulfilling,” Nel reflected. “I could not have asked for more.”
Hyundai Celebrates a Champion
Stanley Anderson, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa, expressed immense pride in Nel’s accomplishment.
“We are immensely proud of Johan’s remarkable achievement in winning the 2025 Modified FWD Championship,” Anderson stated, highlighting the dedication and excellence that Nel brings both to the racetrack and the Hyundai brand.
