Hyundai Motorsport is basking in the glow of triumph following a breathtaking performance at the Central European Rally, culminating in a double podium finish that highlights the team’s competitive prowess. Ott Tänak led the charge, securing victory in the final stages on the challenging German tarmac, marking a significant milestone in Hyundai’s WRC journey.
This victory, achieved ten years after the team’s inaugural win at Rallye Deutschland in 2014, aligns with Hyundai Motorsport’s record of five wins in a single season—matching their success in 2022. As the sun broke through the clouds on Super Sunday, the rally revealed its unpredictable nature, challenging drivers with changing conditions that tested their skills and strategies.
Thrilling Turns and Tactical Mastery
Tänak began the day in pursuit, sitting 5.2 seconds behind the leader. However, a decisive performance during SS15 Knaus Tabbert Am Hochwald 1 shifted the momentum in his favor when Sébastien Ogier encountered difficulties. This error allowed Tänak to gain a 1.9-second advantage, though it was slightly reduced in the subsequent stage.
Undeterred, Tänak delivered an impressive response on SS17, posting the second-fastest time. A misfortune for Ogier, who crashed out, further extended Tänak’s lead to 9.4 seconds as he entered the Power Stage. With careful navigation during the final stretch, Tänak ensured his second win of the year, demonstrating not only speed but strategic foresight in managing his position.
Meanwhile, Thierry Neuville showcased a composed approach throughout the final stages in his Hyundai i20 N Rally1 Hybrid. Remaining cautious yet determined, Neuville capitalized on Ogier’s retirement, moving into third place and securing crucial championship points. His fourth-fastest finish on the Power Stage netted him additional bonuses, positioning him favorably for the upcoming Rally Japan with a 25-point lead over Tänak.
Andreas Mikkelsen faced a turbulent day, battling a puncture and hybrid issues that marred his progress. Nevertheless, he salvaged his performance with a strong showing in the Power Stage, finishing second and gaining valuable championship points.

A Pivotal Moment for the Championship
As the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) gears up for its final showdown in Japan, Hyundai Motorsport stands at a pivotal moment. Both Neuville and Tänak are in contention for the drivers’ title, with their co-drivers vying for the co-drivers’ championship. The stakes are high as Hyundai aims to secure its third manufacturers’ title, building on its previous triumphs in 2019 and 2020.
In reflecting on the rally, Tänak expressed the intensity of the competition, highlighting the razor-thin margins between the top drivers. “The rally was really intense—demanding from the start, with four drivers so close together and never more than ten seconds apart,” he stated. His determination to secure victory underlines the competitive spirit that has characterized Hyundai Motorsport’s season.
Neuville, while acknowledging the challenges, remained optimistic. “Overall, it has been a good weekend. Although we aimed for the win, we only lost two points to Toyota,” he noted. His focus on maintaining a reliable car for the upcoming rally exemplifies the team’s commitment to excellence as they enter the final leg of the championship.
Team Unity and Future Aspirations
Hyundai Motorsport president and team principal Cyril Abiteboul shared his excitement over the results, recognizing the pressures associated with leading both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships. “With today’s excellent team result, we know that a Hyundai Motorsport crew will win the 2024 WRC drivers’ and co-drivers’ titles. This was our primary target from the start of the season,” he remarked. His comments reflect the collective ambition and strategic planning that underpin Hyundai’s approach as they head into Rally Japan.
As the WRC concludes its season, the Central European Rally not only reinforced Hyundai Motorsport’s competitive standing but also set the stage for a thrilling finale. The spotlight will soon shift to Rally Japan from November 21 to 24, where the battle for the championship titles will come to a thrilling climax. Mikkelsen will pilot the third Hyundai i20 N Rally1 Hybrid, eager to make an impact in what promises to be an electrifying end to a highly competitive season.
