Hyundai Motorsport has achieved a remarkable victory and secured a double podium finish at the Central European Rally, marking a significant milestone in their World Rally Championship (WRC) campaign. This exhilarating event, held on Sunday under fluctuating weather conditions, saw Ott Tänak demonstrate exceptional skill and strategy on the challenging German tarmac, further solidifying Hyundai’s prowess in the rallying world.
A Ten-Year Celebration of Success
This victory comes a decade after Hyundai Motorsport’s inaugural WRC win at Rallye Deutschland in 2014, also hosted on German soil. With this latest achievement, the team has matched its record for the most wins in a single season, equaling the five victories accomplished in 2022. The team’s consistent performance this year highlights its commitment to excellence and competitive spirit as they vie for the championship titles.
The Thrills of Super Sunday
Super Sunday commenced with a dramatic shift in weather, as the sun broke through the overcast skies, reminding teams of the unpredictable nature of rallying. Although the stages were dry, they were fraught with challenges, including increasing dirt on the roads and the lurking danger of wet grass. Tänak started the day in second place, 5.2 seconds behind the leader, but quickly seized the opportunity to take control during the pivotal SS15 stage, where a mistake from rival Sébastien Ogier allowed him to gain a 1.9-second advantage.
Tänak’s determination was palpable as he pushed through the subsequent stages, setting the second-fastest time on SS17. Following Ogier’s crash and retirement from the event, Tänak expanded his lead to 9.4 seconds, heading into the Power Stage with maximum points in sight. A carefully managed final stage allowed Tänak and co-driver Martin Järveoja to clinch their second victory of the year.

Neuville’s Steady Performance
Thierry Neuville exhibited commendable composure throughout the final stages, finishing in third place and securing crucial championship points. His calculated approach was rewarded as he capitalized on Ogier’s misfortune, solidifying a comfortable lead in the drivers’ standings with 225 points—25 points ahead of Tänak as they approach the final round in Japan.
Mikkelsen’s Resilience
Andreas Mikkelsen faced a challenging rally, battling a puncture and hybrid issues early on. Nevertheless, he showcased resilience by saving his tires for a final push in the Power Stage, finishing second and adding four valuable points to his championship tally. Mikkelsen’s performance exemplifies the team’s fighting spirit and determination to overcome obstacles.
Looking Ahead to Rally Japan
As the WRC season approaches its climax at Rally Japan, Hyundai Motorsport stands at a pivotal juncture, with both Neuville and Tänak in contention for the drivers’ championship title. With their co-drivers poised for the co-drivers’ title and the team eyeing the manufacturers’ championship, the stakes have never been higher.
Cyril Abiteboul, Hyundai Motorsport president and team principal, expressed his pride in the team’s performance: “We are delighted that a Hyundai Motorsport crew will win the 2024 WRC drivers’ and co-drivers’ titles. This was our primary target from the start of the season, and we are eager to celebrate this achievement together in Japan.”
With a strong finish at the Central European Rally, Hyundai Motorsport has set the stage for an electrifying showdown in Japan from November 21 to 24. The team’s commitment to excellence and strategic acumen in navigating the challenges of rallying ensure that the battle for championship titles will captivate fans and competitors alike in this thrilling finale to the 2024 WRC season. As Hyundai continues to push the boundaries of performance and teamwork, the rallying community eagerly awaits the next chapter in this remarkable journey.
