  • The Veloster Turbo, due to be launched on local roads in the first half of 2014, is the first model in South Africa to feature Hyundai’s 1.6-litre T-GDI engine with a high-compression, twin-scroll turbo-charger.

“The Turbo model in this range further broadens Veloster’s ‘hero role’ in the Hyundai line-up and provides a very attractive option to our next generation of buyers,” says Stanley Anderson, marketing director at Hyundai Automotive South Africa. “With its powerful, high-tech and fuel-efficient features, the Veloster Turbo is the ultimate innovation in the sport coupé segment.”

Twin-Scroll turbocharger And GDI technology

The 1.6-liter turbocharged GDI four-cylinder engine produces 150 kW at 6 000 r/min. and 265 Nm torque from 1 750 to 4 500 r/min. with regular fuel. Hyundai’s 1.6-liter Gamma turbo-charged engine features a twin-scroll turbocharger that, when combined with the GDI system, results in instantaneous power delivery. With more efficient delivery of exhaust gas and greater valve overlap the Veloster Turbo boats improved combustion, low engine speed efficiencies as well as leaner air/fuel ratios.

The direct petrol injection delivery system ensures a shorter, more direct path of fuel delivery, allowing greater control of the fuel mixture at the optimum moment, thus creating a more efficient combustion process that improves fuel efficiency and lowers emissions. The fuel is injected by a camshaft-driven, high-pressure pump that operates at pressures up to 2 175 psi. Direct injection also uses a higher-than-normal 9,5:1 compression ratio.

The Veloster Turbo with the manual 6-speed gearbox accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7,8 sec., and with the automatic 6-speed transmission it is achieved in 7,4 sec. The Veloster Turbo delivers CO2 emissions of 176 g/km and fuel economy of 7,4 liter/100 km for the manual model, and 187 g/km CO2 and 7,8 litres/100 km for the Veloster Turbo equipped with the automatic gearbox in a combined testing cycle.

Athletic and purposeful look

On the outside the Veloster Turbo features the standard car’s unique 1+2 door layout but with the addition of visual enhancements designed to give the car an even more athletic and purposeful look. The front bumper, radiator grille and front fog lights are new to the Turbo. The rear also benefits from a revised bumper, which includes a new fog lamp design plus round twin exhausts and diffuser. The Hyundai designers have removed the Veloster 1.6 GDI’s trapezoidal center exhaust and replaced it with the Turbo model’s two larger free flowing circular pipes, giving the engine a more robust sound.

A longer and wider rear spoiler with integrated LED brake light is included in the visual changes along with a red “Turbo” nameplate on the bottom right of the boot lid.

The Veloster Turbo is equipped with new 18-inch alloy wheel designs with chrome inserts. These are complemented by a moulded side sill, which gives it a low and sporty stance. An extensive range of colour options shall be available for the Veloster Turbo in South Africa.

Comfortable interior with added features

Inside, the Turbo also receives a higher level of standard specification to make it the ultimate version in the Veloster range. It features re-designed leather seats with grey panels, with the “Turbo” nameplate embossed on the driver and front passenger seats. The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable with lumbar support.

Hyundai’s 7-inch touchscreen, incorporating a media centre and reverse parking camera with parking guidance and with three interface layouts the user can choose from, comes as standard. Buyers will also receive a 450-Watt Dimension Premium Audio system with eight speakers including an 8-inch subwoofer, external amplifier and with iPod/USB/Auxiliary input jacks.

An exclusive Supervision Cluster offers the driver information in a larger, clearer and more interactive format, as a result of the Cluster’s two TFT screens located between the tachometer and the speedometer. The Veloster comes standard with heated front seats with a centre stack and controls that resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporates a push-button starter and alloy pedals.

A Bluetooth hands-free phone system, address book download and audio streaming is standard.

Sport-tuned
The Veloster Turbo features a quicker ratio steering rack and a revised steering calibration for precise cornering, feedback and control. The vehicle is fitted with a McPherson strut front suspension, coil springs, gas shock absorbers and a 23 mm diameter front stabiliser.

The rear suspension is a light-weight V torsion beam – a first for Hyundai – with an integrated stabiliser bar to allow bracing of the arms for greater stiffness and improved body roll control.

Six-speed manual or automatic

The Veloster Turbo is paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission, developed in-house at Hyundai.

The manual transmission features a wider gear ratio spread (5,71 vs. 5,25) to handle the additional torque output.

Hyundai’s safety commitment

All Velosters have a Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, optimally managing ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the Motor-Driven electric Power Steering (MDPS). The Veloster features six airbags – including dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain airbags.

Braking is extremely efficient, especially in an emergency, due to an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) including Brake Assist, which provides maximum brake force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) which automatically adjusts the brake force to front and rear axles based on vehicle load conditions.

As with all new Hyundai products, the Veloster Turbo will be backed by the manufacturer’s
fully transferable 5 year/150 000 km warranty and 5 years/150 000 km free roadside assistance. A 5 years/90 000 service plan brings added value to the package.
