Leatherhead, 4 October 2024 – Hyundai Motor UK has reached an unprecedented milestone in September 2024, registering 14,874 cars—a remarkable 20.1% year-on-year growth. This impressive achievement propelled the brand to its highest September market share ever at 5.4%, further solidifying Hyundai’s growing prominence in the UK automotive market.

A major contributor to this success has been Hyundai’s robust line-up of Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs), which accounted for 52% of total sales last month. This performance equates to 7,727 units sold across Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs), Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs), and fully Electric Vehicles (EVs), positioning Hyundai fourth in the AFV market for September and fifth year-to-date.

The SUV Segment: A Pillar of Hyundai’s Success

Hyundai’s dominance in the SUV segment continues to be a crucial factor in its overall market performance. In September alone, the brand sold 10,868 SUVs, representing a striking 73% of total sales. Leading the charge is the ever-popular Hyundai TUCSON, with 5,799 units sold. The TUCSON’s strong performance made it the second best-selling SUV in its segment for retail sales during September, and it holds the third spot year-to-date.

Furthermore, the TUCSON Hybrid stands out as the top-performing hybrid model in the UK, continuing to set the benchmark for hybrid vehicles in the retail market.

Electric Vehicles Surge Ahead of Market Growth

Hyundai’s electric vehicle (EV) sales have outpaced the overall market, marking a significant milestone for the brand’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) strategy. In September, Hyundai’s EV sales surged by 46%, a notable figure compared to the broader market’s 23% growth. Key models driving this increase include the KONA Electric, IONIQ 5, IONIQ 5 N, and IONIQ 6.

Year-to-date, Hyundai has sold 13,396 zero-emission vehicles, accounting for 18.4% of the brand’s total sales. With the addition of the INSTER this month—bringing Hyundai’s EV range to five models—this growth is expected to continue, further strengthening Hyundai’s position in the expanding electric vehicle market.

Commentary from Hyundai’s Leadership

Ashley Andrew, President of Hyundai and Genesis UK, highlighted the significance of these milestones: “Achieving our best-ever September market share and securing the best-selling hybrid in the UK is the perfect exemplification of our model range’s strength. With six ICE cars, three HEV, two PHEV, and four EVs—soon to be five with the addition of the INSTER—we have powertrains and bodystyles that suit every need.”

Andrew also pointed to Hyundai’s holistic approach to customer experience: “To have grown in all our key areas, and to have massively outpaced the growth in the EV market, is a welcome validation of our strategies to deliver not only the vehicles our customers want, but also the experience they want.”

Looking Ahead

Hyundai’s focus on alternative fuel vehicles and electric mobility, combined with its strong presence in the SUV market, is set to drive continued growth in the UK. As the automotive industry shifts towards sustainability and innovation, Hyundai’s commitment to offering a diverse range of powertrains ensures it remains at the forefront of this transformation.

With the upcoming launch of the INSTER and a portfolio that spans across internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles, Hyundai is well-positioned to meet the evolving demands of the UK automotive market and further solidify its place as a leading force in the future of mobility.
