Hyundai Motor has yet again broken ground for a new factory in Changzhou, China.

This is Hyundai’s fourth factory in China.

Hyundai Motor’s vice chairman Mr Euisun Chung, the governor of China’s Hebei province, Mr Zhang Qingwei, the Korean ambassador to China, Mr Jang-soo Kim, and other 600 distinguished guests were present at the ground breaking event.

“We will rewrite the legacy of ‘Hyundai Speed’ and ‘Hyundai Miracle’ with our Chinese partners by the construction of this plant,” said Mr Chung.

The Changzhou factory, built on 1,92 million m2 site with a floor space of 250 000 m2, will be a fully equipped plant with a press shop, body, paint and assembly lines, in addition to an engine plant. The construction of the Changzhou factory will be completed at the end of 2016 with the capacity to produce 200 000 strategic small cars for Hyundai. The plans are to expand capacity to 300 000 units in 2018.

Hyundai Motor will use high-tech automotive manufacturing facilities and knowledge to make Changzhou a smart, environment-friendly factory. By installing the latest automation facilities in press, body, paint and assembly lines, a flexible production system will be in operation. A recycling system, including recycling of gas emissions, water and waste discharge, will also be implemented at the new factory.

In addition, Hyundai Motor will break ground for the building of its Chongqing factory in the second half of this year to advance into Midwest China, which is expected to surge in demand for cars through government in-land development schemes.

The eventual addition of the Chongqing factory will bring the number of Hyundai assembly plants in China to five.

Hyundai also manufacturers cars and commercial vehicles in the brand’s country of origin, South Korea, as well as the United States, India, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Russia and Brazil.

  • Hyundai Automotive South Africa, the local distributor and importer of Hyundai passenger and commercial vehicles, started production of HD commercial trucks last year in its factory in Apex, Benoni, and added the SKD assembly of the H100 Bakkie to the production line in the factory in February this year.
