Mioveni, Romania (28 August 2025) – Horse Technologies, a division of Horse Powertrain and a global leader in hybrid and combustion powertrain solutions, has commenced production of its groundbreaking 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder HR12 LPG engine at its Mioveni facility.
The HR12 LPG is the first engine in the world to integrate direct injection technology with Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), alongside gasoline capability, marking a significant milestone in low-emission powertrain development. The engine features a 48V mild hybrid system, including a Belt-integrated Starter Generator and DC/DC converter, which delivers transient torque assistance, reduces fuel consumption, and lowers CO₂ emissions through features such as start-stop functionality and electric boost during acceleration.
Delivering 140 PS (103 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 230 Nm of torque from 2,100 rpm, the HR12 LPG emits 9% less CO₂ on LPG compared to gasoline. Designed for both European and global markets, the engine fully complies with Euro 6e regulations and is engineered to meet upcoming Euro 7 standards.

The engine incorporates a bespoke direct injection system optimised for LPG, an electronic vaporizer for precise compression control, and reinforced valve-train components. Its LPG fuel tank is cleverly positioned beneath the boot floor in the spare wheel well, preserving interior space and practicality.
Patrice Haettel, CEO of Horse Technologies, stated:
“The arrival of the HR12 LPG demonstrates our commitment to delivering genuinely innovative powertrain solutions across all fuel types. Direct-injection technology for LPG fuel makes it a true world-first for Horse Technologies and underscores our leadership in alternative fuels technology.”
Engineered across Horse Technologies’ sites in Bucuresti, Titu, and Mioveni, the HR12 LPG represents the seventh powertrain generation produced at the Mioveni plant, which has an annual capacity of 450,000 engines.
