HORSE Powertrain Solutions, a division of HORSE Powertrain Limited, has commenced production of a new 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine optimized for plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles (PHEVs). This state-of-the-art engine, known as the HR12, is set to power Renault’s upcoming Rafale E-Tech 4×4 Hybrid and showcases HORSE’s ongoing commitment to innovative, low-emission mobility solutions.
HR12: A High-Performance Engine for the Hybrid Era
The HR12 engine, now being produced at HORSE’s Valladolid facility, demonstrates remarkable efficiency and power. Delivering a peak output of 110kW (152PS) and a maximum torque of 230Nm, the engine is tailored to meet the demands of the rapidly growing PHEV market. Initial production is targeting 1,200 units per month, with the potential to ramp up to 6,875 units per month as demand grows.
Patrice Haettel, CEO of HORSE Powertrain Limited, commented on the significance of this production milestone, stating, “This HR12 is the first plug-in hybrid engine manufactured at our Valladolid facility and the second produced by HORSE globally. This is a major landmark for our team, and proof of how HORSE’s internal combustion engine expertise can facilitate market-leading, low-emission mobility solutions.”

Hybrid Powertrain Innovation
In addition to the HR12 engine, the complete powertrain unit in the Renault Rafale E-Tech 4×4 Hybrid will feature three electric motors. The system is composed of two main motors – one on the front axle providing 50kW of power and 205Nm of torque, and another on the rear axle delivering 100kW and 195Nm of torque. A secondary high-voltage starter generator (HSG) motor contributes an additional 25kW and 50Nm of torque.
This advanced setup results in a combined output of over 220kW (300hp), delivered through a cutting-edge clutchless multi-mode gearbox. Powered by a 400-volt lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 22kWh, the Rafale E-Tech 4×4 Hybrid will achieve an impressive pure-electric range of over 100 kilometers. This superior efficiency, coupled with the hybrid powertrain, enables the vehicle to attain exceptional environmental performance, with CO2 emissions of just 15g/km and an ultra-low fuel consumption of 0.7 liters per 100 kilometers in electric mode.
A Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
The development of the HR12 engine marks a significant investment in HORSE’s Valladolid plant, with a total of €4 million allocated to support the transition to hybrid engine production. This includes €260,000 dedicated to staffing, resulting in the creation of 345 jobs. This investment reflects HORSE’s vision of being at the forefront of the automotive industry’s transition toward cleaner, more efficient powertrain technologies.
HORSE’s commitment to innovation in powertrain systems is reflected in its global operations. With 17 plants and five R&D centers, HORSE Powertrain Limited is a world leader in hybrid and combustion powertrain solutions, producing 3.2 million units annually for automotive manufacturers worldwide.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve toward lower emissions and increased efficiency, HORSE Powertrain Solutions remains a pivotal player in providing cutting-edge technology. The new HR12 engine and its integration into the Renault Rafale E-Tech 4×4 Hybrid serve as a testament to HORSE’s role in driving forward the future of mobility.
