HORSE Powertrain Limited, a global leader in hybrid and combustion powertrain solutions, has announced the expansion of its state-of-the-art engine and emissions testing services at its Curitiba plant in Brazil. For the first time, third-party automotive manufacturers in South America can take advantage of this sophisticated facility, allowing them to conduct in-depth powertrain calibration, durability, and emissions testing on-site. This development is set to revolutionize the regional automotive industry by providing manufacturers with access to advanced tools and expertise previously reserved for HORSE’s internal operations.
The Curitiba plant is a pioneering facility in South America, offering a comprehensive suite of testing services that meets the region’s rigorous automotive standards. From base engine calibration to emissions and durability testing, the plant’s capabilities are designed to address the unique challenges of the South American market, known for its varied driving environments and widespread use of ethanol fuel. The plant can manage up to 12,000 hours of testing annually, split between laboratory simulations and real-world driving conditions.
Cutting-Edge Facilities for Localised Solutions
At the core of the Curitiba plant’s offerings are its three engine test benches, equipped with the latest technology from industry specialists. These benches, capable of running for 6,500 hours a year in a two-shift operation, allow engineers to carry out base calibration and performance optimization of powertrains. Despite the plant’s altitude of 920 metres, a specialized pressurized chamber enables simulation of conditions from sea level upwards, offering unparalleled accuracy for regional calibration.
The facility’s versatility extends beyond the lab, with access to extensive test tracks and diverse driving routes, allowing for comprehensive on-road powertrain evaluations. This dual approach ensures that automotive manufacturers can test their engines under the widest variety of real-world driving conditions, enhancing reliability and performance across varying terrains.
Wesley Palma, Plant Director at HORSE Curitiba, highlighted the plant’s role in the region: “This state-of-the-art facility, featuring the latest engine dynamometers, emissions laboratories, and homologation facilities, represents a valuable resource for our clients in South America. We’re excited to open these services to third-party manufacturers, providing tailored and efficient solutions to meet the growing demands of our customers.”

Advanced Emissions Testing Capabilities
One of the standout features of HORSE’s Curitiba facility is its comprehensive emissions testing capabilities, essential for the region’s stringent environmental regulations. The facility includes a chassis dynamometer bench, used for emissions calibration and homologation. Operating on a four-shift cycle, this bench is capable of handling 4,500 hours of testing annually. Crucially, the facility is ISO 17025-certified, ensuring it meets the highest international standards for testing and calibration.
Given the widespread use of ethanol in South America, the Curitiba plant is equipped to perform aldehyde emissions testing, addressing a critical need in the region. The chemical laboratory at the plant can accurately measure and analyze these emissions, ensuring compliance with local fuel standards. The facility’s vehicle evaporative test chamber is another advanced feature, capable of analyzing fuel system performance by detecting and eliminating fuel vapours from development powertrains.
In addition, the plant’s CO2 testing capabilities are bolstered by the use of a Portable Emissions Measurement System (PEMS), which captures exhaust emission data during real-world driving. This allows engineers to ensure compliance with the latest Real Driving Emissions (RDE) standards, combining laboratory precision with real-world accuracy.
João Dias, Head of R&D Center at HORSE Brazil, emphasized the importance of emissions testing in the region: “The Brazilian market has some of the most rigorous criteria for testing emissions and fuel consumption in the world. By offering testing solutions that meet these standards, we are proud to contribute to sustainable mobility across South America.”
