Hino South Africa is accelerating its commitment to sustainable transport solutions with the extension of its Hino 300 Hybrid trial programme. Launched in partnership with selected local customers, this initiative forms part of a broader study into the performance, practicality, and customer appetite for new energy vehicles (NEVs) in South Africa’s commercial transport landscape.

At the heart of this low-emissions push is the Hino 300 Hybrid—a forward-thinking vehicle that pairs a 4-litre Euro 6 turbo-diesel engine with an electric motor. The result is a significant reduction in harmful emissions and a marked improvement in fuel efficiency. Unlike typical hybrid passenger cars that often sacrifice engine displacement in the name of economy, Hino’s approach retains a full-size diesel engine, prioritising durability and a robust, unstressed powertrain capable of handling the demands of daily logistics operations.

Local Trials for Real-World Insights

The first three Hino 300 Hybrid units arrived in South Africa in 2023 and were placed into service with Namlog Logistics. Operating out of Toyota South Africa Motors’ Africa Parts Centre in Ekurhuleni, the vehicles are part of the company’s broader NEV strategy. This hands-on testing programme is vital to understanding how hybrid technology performs under real-world local conditions, from fuel economy and emissions to maintenance, payload, and resale value.

“We are trialling several Hino 300 Hybrid trucks with customers to evaluate these factors locally,” explains Itumeleng Segage, General Manager of Hino SA. “The balance between cost, range, payload, maintenance and resale are all critical measures when determining what technology works best for specific applications.”

Proven Performance in Global Markets

The Hino 300 Hybrid is already making waves in overseas markets. In Australia, where Euro VI emission regulations come into effect from November 2025, the truck has gained traction as an ideal solution for urban and regional deliveries. In rigorous local testing—including a 300 km loop combining the Bathurst race circuit with real-world street conditions—the Wide Cab variant delivered fuel savings of up to 24%, with the Standard Cab closely following at 22%.

Independent testing by Australia’s GoAuto media group corroborated these findings, recording a fuel saving of 21.1% during their assessment—underscoring the tangible benefits of hybrid technology in commercial applications.

Purpose-Built Hybrid Engineering

Technically speaking, the Hino 300 Hybrid integrates its electric motor between the clutch and gearbox in a parallel configuration with the diesel engine. This hybrid setup offers a combined output of 111 kW and a peak torque of 470 Nm—available from as low as 1,200 rpm. This seamless torque delivery not only improves drivability but also contributes to a smoother, more efficient delivery cycle.

Equipped with a six-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), drivers benefit from both ease of use and manual override capability when required. And while its powertrain may be hybrid, the Hino 300 Hybrid doesn’t compromise on standard features, offering air conditioning, electric windows, AM/FM radio, daytime running lights, and dual airbags as part of its standard equipment list.

Driving Towards a Greener Future

Hino Motors of Japan has long been a pioneer in environmentally conscious vehicle development. Through a multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality, the brand is actively exploring compressed natural gas (CNG), hydrogen, battery electric, and diesel-electric hybrid drivetrains. The Hino 300 Hybrid forms part of this diversified portfolio, exemplifying the brand’s vision for sustainable commercial transport.

As the local trial expands, Hino South Africa remains committed to gathering insights directly from operators. This feedback will inform the brand’s strategic direction in the NEV space and determine whether hybrid technology could be a cornerstone of future fleet solutions.

“We are very enthusiastic about the value of hybrid technology in many of the operations that suit the 300 Series,” Segage concludes. “We are keenly looking forward to the results of these local trials and the feedback from the customers who have them on loan.”

With South Africa’s logistics sector under increasing pressure to adopt cleaner, more efficient solutions, the Hino 300 Hybrid may well prove to be the right vehicle at the right time.
