The prestigious Claret Jug has returned to The Open, chauffeured by the defending champion in the all-new electric G-Class (energy consumption combined: 30.3-27.7 kWh/100 km | CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km | CO₂ class: A). This year, The Open can be experienced like never before, exclusively in selected Mercedes-Benz vehicles through the official Championship app.
Since 2011, Mercedes-Benz has proudly served as an official Patron of The Open, providing a sophisticated shuttle fleet for distinguished guests, players, and officials.
Stuttgart/Troon – Mercedes-Benz heralds the commencement of The 152nd Open with unparalleled flair. Before the first swing, defending champion Brian Harman, winner of The 151st Open, returned the iconic Claret Jug to Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A (The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews), in the new electric G-Class. This symbolic act underscores Mercedes-Benz’s pivotal role in perpetuating this cherished tradition at the Championship each year.
Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, remarked, “The ‘Return of the Claret Jug’ by the defending champion is a symbolic moment in the week of The Open and Mercedes-Benz has played an important role in supporting this tradition at the Championship each year. We share similar values in which the combination of tradition and innovation are reflected in everything that we do.”
Throughout The 152nd Open, Mercedes-Benz will offer an exclusive shuttle fleet comprising hybrid and all-electric vehicles for select guests, players, and officials. A standout feature this year is the integration of The Open’s official app in Mercedes-Benz vehicles. This innovative addition allows customers to follow the Championship in real time, transforming their cars into mobile viewing platforms.

Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management at Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Marketing & Sales, stated, “Our partnership with The Open reflects our shared values of tradition and innovation. By integrating the official The Open app into our vehicles, we are demonstrating the future of mobility and enable our customers to experience the prestigious Championship in a completely new way, at any time.”
As an Official Patron of The Open, Mercedes-Benz marks its 13th year of partnership with The R&A. In celebration of this enduring alliance, a special campaign was launched in St Andrews, the home of golf, blending lifestyle and sport. The event showcased the unique fusion of Mercedes-Benz’s brand heritage, fashion, and the iconic history of golf.
From 14 to 21 July 2024, The Open will take place at the renowned Troon Golf Course on Scotland’s west coast. The 152nd edition marks the tenth time the Championship has been held at this historic venue, which last hosted the event in 2016. As the only golf major played outside the USA, The Open continues to captivate audiences worldwide with its rich tradition and competitive spirit.
