The inaugural prototypes of the Range Rover Electric are currently undergoing rigorous global testing, beginning with evaluations in the Arctic Circle’s frigid temperatures to ensure precise cold weather performance.
The debut images showcase the first all-black prototypes, embodying a sleek modernist design while maintaining the iconic Range Rover lineage. The visible, uncamouflaged exteriors highlight the superior build quality of these initial prototypes.
Following a comprehensive year of component testing and virtual development, the first on-road appearances of the Range Rover Electric vehicles signal a milestone in the journey towards producing the brand’s quietest and most sophisticated model yet.
Diverse Testing Environments
From the icy extremes of the Arctic Circle at temperatures as low as -40°C, to the sweltering heat of the Middle East exceeding +50°C, the all-electric Range Rover is being tested across the world’s most demanding conditions. These tests primarily focus on the vehicle’s battery and Electric Drive Unit (EDU), encompassing the transmission, electric motor, and power electronics, all assembled in-house by JLR—a first for the company.

Advanced Propulsion and Traction Control
Testing on Sweden’s frozen lakes has validated the new proprietary all-electric propulsion system of Range Rover, enhancing its performance on slippery surfaces and maintaining its unmatched all-terrain capabilities.
In another first for Range Rover, the introduction of a new traction control system ensures extraordinary performance on icy and low-grip terrains. Unlike traditional systems that operate through the ABS unit, the Range Rover Electric’s system manages wheel slip directly at each electric drive control unit, significantly reducing the torque reaction time per wheel to nearly instant responses.
JLR’s in-house developed software fine-tunes the EDU speed for optimal wheel slip management, lessening reliance on ABS and maximizing traction across all conditions. This advanced traction system integrates seamlessly with stability control and chassis systems to deliver a smoother, more refined driving experience.
Commitment to Excellence
Thomas Mueller, Executive Director of Product Engineering, emphasized the dedication to maintaining the Range Rover hallmark of luxury, refinement, and capability, enhanced with silent electric propulsion. “Our extensive testing and development program is designed to ensure the Range Rover Electric’s performance remains unmatched,” Mueller stated.
As testing continues, the Range Rover Electric is set to redefine luxury electric travel, promising a blend of sophisticated technology and traditional Range Rover comfort.
