The MasterDrive Driver Search culminated in triumph this year, as its champion claimed first place in his class at the prestigious Simola Hillclimb in May. Shuaib Dhansay not only showcased exceptional driving prowess but also exhibited resilience in navigating unforeseen challenges.
Eugene ‘Gino’ Nourse, General Manager of coastal regions at MasterDrive, emphasized the profound impact of the initiative on motorsport. “This initiative aims to open doors for individuals who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in such a renowned event, serving as a springboard for their careers.”
Nourse expressed MasterDrive’s pride in Dhansay’s achievement, highlighting his determined spirit throughout the Hillclimb. “Seeing Shuaib stand atop the podium was truly gratifying. His performance and positive attitude were commendable.”
Reflecting on his Simola Hillclimb experience, Dhansay described it as transformative. “Competing in this event was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a profound learning experience. What you think you know about such competitions barely scratches the surface of what you truly learn.”
He added, “To compete alongside drivers I’ve admired on TV was an honor. Being a participant, rather than a spectator, creates an entirely different atmosphere. Despite the modest size of my class, winning was incredibly meaningful. Standing on that podium where so many legends have stood before me was unforgettable.”

Discussing his pre-race nerves, Dhansay credited his training from the MasterDrive Driver Search for calming him. “Once the engine starts, the nerves dissipate. The skills ingrained during training take over the moment you set off from the starting line.”
Acknowledging the team’s pivotal role in his success, Dhansay recounted a critical moment. “When faced with an unexpected challenge, we had minimal time to resolve it. The team rallied, ensuring I made my final hill run with moments to spare.”
For Dhansay, the MasterDrive Driver Search was not just a competition but a transformative journey. “It’s not just about driving; it’s about personal growth. I’m now looking forward to new opportunities.”
He expressed gratitude to all involved, including Race Driver South Africa (RDSA) and Performance with Page. “Special thanks to the Cape Town and Johannesburg MasterDrive teams for their unwavering support. Without their belief in me, achieving my dream wouldn’t have been possible.”
Looking ahead, Nourse highlighted MasterDrive’s commitment to nurturing young talent. “The success of the 2024 MasterDrive Driver Search inspires us to eagerly anticipate next year’s initiative.”
