In a world rapidly shifting towards sustainability, electric vehicles (EVs) have become a cornerstone of the future. However, as the adoption of EVs accelerates, so does the need for smarter and more flexible energy management systems. Enter Ohme, the UK’s fastest-growing dynamic EV home charging company, which has been pioneering new ways to make EV charging not only efficient but also profitable for consumers. Their recent venture, the CrowdFlex energy trial, is a shining example of how innovation can drive both environmental and economic benefits.
CrowdFlex: A Game-Changer in Grid Flexibility
The CrowdFlex trial, an Ofgem-funded project led by the Electricity System Operator (ESO) for Great Britain, represents a significant leap forward in the intersection of consumer behavior and grid management. Ohme’s goal was simple yet ambitious: incentivize EV drivers to plug in more frequently and at optimal times, thereby increasing the availability of grid services.
Running over the summer months from May to July, the trial saw Ohme customers participating with minimal effort. Drivers were asked to plug in their EVs whenever they were parked at home. No changes to pre-set charging schedules were required, allowing for a seamless experience. The rewards system designed by Ohme encouraged more frequent plug-ins, leading to an 80% increase in daytime charging and a 50% increase in overnight charging.
These increased plug-in rates translated into more EVs being available to provide grid services such as shifting electricity consumption away from peak demand periods. The data collected during the trial has laid the groundwork for understanding the potential of EV drivers to play a pivotal role in balancing the electricity grid in the near future.

Empowering Consumers and the Grid
David Watson, CEO of Ohme, highlighted the success of the trial, stating, “Ohme’s summer trial results with CrowdFlex were encouraging and we saw a very positive response rate from our customers. Grid flexibility services are estimated to be able to save consumers £10 billion per year in energy costs by 2050, so it was great to be able to reward our customers for plugging in more and being a key driver of that flexibility. All they had to do was park up, plug in, and let Ohme take care of the rest.”
Sanna Atherton, the CrowdFlex Project Lead at ESO, echoed this sentiment, noting, “It’s exciting to see the first signs of the potential for domestic flexibility to help reliably manage the grid. CrowdFlex is developing this deeper understanding of consumer flexibility and forecasting and will start to establish domestic flexibility as a predictable resource for the control room, also helping consumers reduce their energy costs and another step towards the decarbonization of the energy system.”
Looking Ahead: Winter Trials and Beyond
Building on the success of the summer trial, Ohme is preparing to launch a winter trial that will extend from September to April. This trial will involve a larger group of EV drivers who will be rewarded for altering their charging behavior, further enhancing the potential for grid flexibility.
The CrowdFlex project, supported by funding from Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund in partnership with Innovate UK, is being delivered by a consortium of forward-thinking partners, including OVO, Centre for Net Zero, ERM, AWS, National Grid Electricity Distribution, and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks. Ohme’s role as the official charger provider for leading automotive brands like Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Polestar, and the Volkswagen Group in the UK and Ireland further cements its position as a leader in the EV charging industry.
