A Historical Partnership
Defender celebrates one of the longest-standing charity partnerships in the world – a remarkable 70-year relationship with the British Red Cross. This collaboration began in 1954 when the first Series Land Rovers started supporting the Red Cross, marking the beginning of a legacy that continues to thrive today.
The roots of this partnership can be traced back to the debut of the first Series Land Rover at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1948. By 1954, a specially adapted Land Rover was serving as a mobile dispensary in the deserts of Dubai, exemplifying the brand’s commitment to humanitarian aid.
Celebrating a Milestone
In honor of this enduring partnership, Defender has launched a new flagship project in Italy, the birthplace of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. This project, coinciding with the 160th anniversary of the movement, underscores Defender’s ongoing dedication to supporting communities in crisis.
As part of the celebrations, a specially equipped Defender 130 emergency response vehicle was handed over to the Italian Red Cross. This vehicle, fitted with advanced satellite communications hardware, ensures continuous connectivity in disaster-hit locations, enhancing the resilience and effectiveness of relief efforts.
Innovative Emergency Response
The Defender 130 has been modified to handle extraordinary emergencies, with satellite technology enabling communication even in the most remote areas. This technology, already used in static emergency units, is now being deployed on a mobile unit for the first time. Additionally, the vehicle’s winch and tow hook, along with its 3,000kg towing capacity, make it an indispensable tool in disaster response scenarios.
Mark Cameron, Managing Director of Defender, emphasized the significance of this partnership: “What started in the deserts of Dubai and forest villages of Kenya in 1954 has become part of our DNA. Together, we provide vital assistance for humanity, often when the tarmac runs out and in the harshest of conditions.”

Global Humanitarian Efforts
Defender’s partnership with the British Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has impacted over two million lives in more than 50 countries. This collaboration spans various global projects, each tailored to address specific humanitarian needs.
In the UK, Defender supports British Red Cross teams across the country, including providing a specially adapted Defender 130 to assist communities affected by extreme weather. In Nepal, Defender helps communities prepare for natural disasters, enhancing resilience and reducing the impact of emergencies.
Defender’s commitment extends to training volunteers and supporting disaster relief efforts in Italy, Australia, Switzerland, and Morocco. Each initiative demonstrates Defender’s dedication to making a lasting impact on vulnerable communities worldwide.
A Legacy of Compassion
Throughout its 70-year partnership with the Red Cross, Defender has consistently demonstrated its commitment to humanitarian aid. From supporting nurses in Kenya in 1954 to aiding in hurricane response operations in the Caribbean and sanitation projects in Tajikistan, Defender has been a reliable partner in times of crisis.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Defender deployed a fleet of vehicles to deliver medicine and food to vulnerable people across the UK and globally. This effort underscored Defender’s unwavering dedication to supporting those in need, regardless of the challenges.
Looking Ahead
As Defender celebrates this significant milestone, it continues to participate in celebrations and fundraising initiatives to support its partnership with the British Red Cross. The collaboration remains as vital as ever, addressing the increasing challenges posed by natural disasters, conflict, and climate change.
Defender’s legacy of compassion and resilience stands as a testament to what can be achieved through enduring partnerships. With a commitment to humanitarian aid that spans seven decades, Defender and the British Red Cross are poised to continue making a positive impact for years to come.
