volkswagenTHE Formula Volkswagen racing at Phakisa on Saturday saw the defending champion, Jayde Kruger (1 – Investchem / First Freight / GF Plastics) in excellent form. Kruger led the qualifying session to claim pole position for the first race and followed this up with an excellent start at round six of the WesBank Super Series.

This saw Kruger lead the field into the first corner with his big challenger for championship position, Simon Moss (38 – Southern Sun / Terry Moss Racing), hot on his heels. Moss is in a fight this season to claim the championship honours and take the title from Kruger. He appears to be taking this fight very seriously, but his enthusiasm appears to have gotten the best of him.

Lap three of the first race saw him disappear from the field when he went into a corner way too hot and he had to rejoin right at the back. So, while the championship leader made the most of the breathing room to take an easy race victory, Moss set about regaining all the lost ground.

This saw him race through the entire Formula 1600 field and then through the Formula Volkswagen field to cross the line for second place, behind Kruger.

While Moss was working on this, Ernie van der Walt (95 – Ferodo Racing) and Nicholas van Weely (87 – Anglorand) were battling for track position to see who would finish in third place. It was Van Weely who came up trumps at the end to take the final podium position. Unfortunately for Van der Walt his fourth place then became an exclusion when his car failed to tip the scales at the required finishing weight.

This promoted Mikey Taylor (26 – Ferodo / AfriGis / VMP Motorsport) to fourth place. Taylor went on to achieve an even better result in race two when he claimed second place, finishing behind Kruger. Van der Walt made no mistakes the second time around to claim third place, bettering on his position across the line in race one.

With Kruger again strong off the start line in race two, and Moss chasing, it shaped up to be a very similar result – especially when Moss again went off the track. This time around he lost the nose cone of his race car and he had to settle for seventh place across the line.

Race two saw Van der Walt reverse the result of the first race, beating Van Weely to the line to claim third spot. With Kruger claiming both race wins he also took the overall victory for the day with Taylor producing his best result in the series to take second spot for the day. Van Weely’s third and fourth place finish in each of the races put him in third place overall for the day.

RACE RESULTS:

RACE ONE:

  1. Jayde Kruger (1 – Investchem / First Freight / GF Plastics)
  2. Simon Moss (38 – Southern Sun / Terry Moss Racing)
  3. Nicholas van Weely (87 – Anglorand)
