In celebration of its Centenary year in South Africa, Ford Motor Company is spearheading a transformative project aimed at uplifting disadvantaged communities through education. The initiative, in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Department of Basic Education, focuses on building 100 early childhood development (ECD) centres across the nation. This ambitious project not only honours the legacy of Nelson Mandela but also addresses critical educational infrastructure needs in underserved areas.

A Legacy of Education and Empowerment

Ford South Africa’s commitment to education reflects Nelson Mandela’s belief in the power of learning to uplift communities and create a brighter future. Neale Hill, president of Ford Motor Company Africa, highlighted the company’s dedication to this cause, stating, “We are honoured and privileged to be supporting Madiba’s legacy and love for the children of South Africa by partnering with the Nelson Mandela Foundation to build 100 early childhood development centres across the country.”

Project Overview and Progress

The project, funded by Ford South Africa with additional contributions from Ford Credit, aims to replace outdated and inadequate nursery schools, pre-schools, and ECD facilities. The new centres are designed to meet government health and safety standards and provide a conducive learning environment.

As of July 2024, a total of 27 ECD centres have been completed and handed over to communities. These centres are strategically located in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Eastern Cape, with 1 centre in Gauteng, 14 in KwaZulu-Natal, and 12 in the Eastern Cape. Each centre features modern brick-and-mortar structures with classrooms, a kitchen, toilet facilities, and a sick bay, benefiting 1,075 children. The remaining 73 centres are either under construction or in the planning stages.

Community Impact

The new ECD centres are replacing old and makeshift facilities that have long served disadvantaged communities. “These bright and colourful new ECD centres replace the many woefully inadequate shacks, huts, and tired old buildings that served as informal nursery schools,” Hill remarked. The impact on local communities has been profound, as these new facilities not only provide a better learning environment but also open up avenues for government financial support, enhancing the overall quality of education.

Spotlight: Bophelo Daycare Centre

One notable facility is the Bophelo Daycare Centre in Mamelodi, Pretoria, which was officially handed over on 29 July 2024. This centre, located near Ford South Africa’s head office and manufacturing plant, accommodates 62 children from the Mamelodi community. Principal Lily Mokwena expressed gratitude for the new facility, highlighting its significance in improving care and learning for the children.

Expanding Educational Support
Ford’s commitment to education extends beyond the ECD centres. The company’s Centenary CSR initiatives also include:

Maths and Science Laboratories
Partnering with the Gift of the Givers Foundation, Ford is transforming 100 shipping containers into fully equipped maths and science laboratories for disadvantaged primary schools. This project aims to enhance STEM education in underserved areas.

Scholarship Program
Ford Philanthropy is awarding 100 scholarships to students from impoverished communities pursuing technical high school education or vocational training. This initiative targets fields such as mechatronics, autotronics, millwrighting, and electrical trades.

Ford South Africa’s Centenary initiative is a testament to the company’s dedication to community upliftment through education. By addressing infrastructure needs and expanding educational opportunities, Ford is making a tangible difference in the lives of young South Africans. The ongoing projects underscore Ford’s commitment to supporting educational development and honouring Nelson Mandela’s legacy.
