PRETORIA, South Africa, 26 May 2014 – Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) hosted its annual Ford Careers Day last week. Students from various schools in Alexandra Johannesburg, Entokozweni in Mamelodi, as well as employees’children were hosted at the Ford Assembly Plant in Silverton.

Careers Day is a career information initiative targeted at Grade 11 and 12 pupils who wish to obtain information regarding the various career opportunities available to them in the motor industry. This education drive forms part of Ford’s commitment to the country.

“Careers Day is hosted with the aim to help South African learners make their tertiary education application process that much easier by giving students valuable insights into the numerous opportunities available to them in the motor industry,”says FMCSA president and CEO, Jeff Nemeth.

The initiative saw approximately 75 students spending the day at the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria. Those in attendance were presented with practical information on different career paths offered within the automotive industry, encompassing a diverse range of specialist fields, including Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Purchasing, Customer Services, Product Development, Manufacturing and more.

Ford’s Driving Skills For Life (DSFL) instructors were also on hand and offered valuable advice to the young students as they prepare to take to the roads in the future. “The driving programmes generally available in South Africa tend to have a performance bias where they are either designed to promote the performance of a specific vehicle brand, or are marketed as a leisure or lifestyle activity,” explains Nemeth.

What sets DSFL apart is that it is applicable to all South African drivers, no matter their age or the type of car they drive, and has the three benefits of safety, fuel efficiency and environmentally conscious driving – the latter having been overlooked in South Africa for far too long.

“At Ford we’re committed to investing in the future of young people in South Africa. The Careers Day programme is evidence of our aim to invest in the development of skills both on the roads and in the office,”added Nemeth.
