Ford Pro has cemented its dominance in the global light commercial vehicle sector by securing its fourth International Pick-up Award (IPUA) title. The newly developed Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has been named the 2026/27 winner—an achievement that also marks the first time a hybrid drivetrain has ever taken top honours in the award’s fifteen-year history.
Presented by the International Pick-up Award jury—comprised of members of the long-established International Van of the Year Award (IVOTY) group—the accolade signals a significant shift in the evolution of work-ready electrified mobility.
A Competitive Field in Bulgaria
The decision followed an extensive test programme conducted in Bulgaria last month, where the latest 4×4 Double-Cab contenders were evaluated across both on-road and off-road environments. Competing alongside the Ranger PHEV were the INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster, the Foton V9 and the Maxus entry—two of which represented the growing influence of Chinese manufacturers in the segment.
Despite strong performances across the board, Ford ultimately accumulated the most marks overall, with the INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster securing second place and the Foton V9 taking third.
Hybrid Power Without Compromise
Celebrating the milestone, Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman of the IVOTY & IPUA jury, outlined why Ford’s electrified approach resonated so strongly with the panel.
“In delivering outstanding, class-leading performance with even greater efficiency and lower fuel costs for everyday journeys, the new Ranger PHEV seamlessly combines a 2.3-litre EcoBoost petrol engine with a 75 kW battery-powered motor. A choice of EV driving modes means you can drive on petrol, battery power, or a combination of the two,” Sweeney explained.
“With 281 PS of power, 697 Nm of torque, and up to 3500 kg maximum towing capacity, there’s no compromise to the iconic toughness and hard-working capability of Ford Ranger.”
In an era where full battery-electric pick-ups remain impractical for many users—particularly in demanding commercial settings—the Ranger PHEV’s hybrid drivetrain was recognised as a “smart driveline” solution. One of the judges summarised the jury’s sentiment succinctly: “If BEV’s not (yet) possible, go for PHEV.”

Recognition at Solutrans 2025
The official announcement and trophy handover took place at the Solutrans 2025 Gala Dinner at Eurexpo in Lyon, France, on 19 November. Accepting the award, Hans Schep, General Manager, Ford Pro Europe, emphasised the significance of the win for Ford’s electrification strategy.
“We are incredibly proud and honoured that the new Ford Ranger PHEV has been named the International Pick-up Award winner for 2026/27,” Schep said. “Having won with the all-new Ford Ranger in 2024, we deeply value the recognition the jury has now given to the electrified plug-in hybrid model, demonstrating the consistent excellence and innovative spirit that defines the Ranger lineage.”
Schep highlighted how the PHEV variant enhances rather than compromises the Ranger’s core attributes.
“Pick-up customers rely on the capability of their vehicle to get the job done, and this recognition further validates that the Ranger PHEV doesn’t just match the uncompromising performance our customers expect—it elevates it. With its electrification, the Ranger PHEV delivers even more, including the innovative Pro Power Onboard feature, which transforms the vehicle into a mobile power source. This significantly enhances productivity and utility on any job site, truly making it an ultimate partner for businesses across Europe.”
Ford’s Fourth IPUA Title
This latest win strengthens Ford’s position as the most decorated brand in IPUA history. The Ranger first won the award in 2013, again in 2020, and shared the title with the Volkswagen Amarok in 2024. With the 2026/27 victory, Ford stands alone as the outright leader—reflecting both the Ranger’s enduring popularity and its consistent chart-topping sales performance across Europe.
“As the fourth occasion that the Ford Ranger in various incarnations has won this prestigious award, Ford is the outright leader in its field, both with most IPUA accolades and consistently topping the European sales charts,” Sweeney added.
A Defining Moment for Electrified Pick-ups
The Ranger PHEV’s triumph marks an important inflection point for the pick-up segment. It demonstrates that electrified solutions—when engineered to deliver uncompromised capability—can satisfy the real-world demands of commercial customers while moving the industry toward a lower-emission future.
As the first hybrid to take home the IPUA trophy, the Ford Ranger PHEV not only makes history but sets a new benchmark for what electrified pick-ups can achieve in the years ahead.
