PRETORIA, South Africa, 04 May, 2011 – Ford brand passenger car retail sales increased 87% in South Africa from January – April 2011, compared to the same time last year.

According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa), Ford passenger car retail sales grew almost three times more than the South African passenger car market in April 2011.

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (Manufacturing) (Pty) Ltd (FMCSA) sold a total of 16,860 vehicles in the first four months of the year 2011, and 2, 727 vehicles in April 2011.

FMCSA sold 750 units of the phenomenal Figo, which was the seventh best selling vehicle in South Africa in April 2011.  The popular sub-compact, which was a runner up for South African Car of the Year 2011, continues to demonstrate its high quality, fuel efficiency and value for money, earning a top ten sales position every month so far this year.

“Despite the seasonal challenges we see every April, we are delighted that the Ford brand continues to show strong improvement,” said Gavin Golightly, FMCSA National Sales Manager.  “More and more consumers in South Africa appreciate the high quality, fuel efficient and safe vehicles Ford offers, and particularly that they offer such great value and low cost of ownership.”

Ford’s strong passenger car performance helped boost FMCSA sales 3, 25% during a challenging April sales month.

New vehicles sales for April were 8% up on the same month last year, according to Naamsa. However, the results were the lowest recorded sales month since April 2010, 27, 8% down on last month. Passenger car sales grew 11, 7% when compared to April 2010, and Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sales declined 2, 5%.
