The prestigious 2024 Fleet Safety Awards, aimed at recognising leaders in road safety and fleet management excellence, has extended its entry deadline until 25 September 2024 due to overwhelming demand. Initially set to close last week, the extended timeframe allows more organisations and individuals to submit their entries and compete for a share of R200,000 in prizes.
Eugene Herbert, CEO of MasterDrive, expressed excitement over the increasing interest in the Awards, highlighting how the number of entries has significantly risen each year. “The enthusiasm for the Fleet Safety Awards continues to grow, with entries on track to be four times higher than in the first year,” he said. “We’re pleased to offer this extension, giving participants extra time to complete their submissions.”

The Fleet Safety Awards aim to recognise and reward those organisations that have implemented robust safety strategies, significantly reducing road crashes and fatalities. By shining a spotlight on these initiatives, the Awards play a pivotal role in promoting best practices within the industry.
Herbert emphasised the importance of acknowledging fleet managers and companies that lead by example in promoting road safety. “The more individuals and organisations that proudly showcase their achievements in lowering crash rates, the greater the impact on the overall safety of South Africa’s roads.”
Exciting Prizes and Charitable Contributions
In addition to recognition, the Awards offer significant financial rewards. This year, the prize pool has doubled, increasing from R100,000 last year to R200,000. The grand prize winners will receive cash prizes, with an added bonus for the winner of the Best Organisation category. The selected organisation will also be able to donate to a charitable cause of their choice within the industry. Herbert noted the potential of these cash prizes to create meaningful change: “These rewards serve not only as motivation but also as a means to make a lasting impact on the lives of recipients.”
SABOA Partnership and New Award Categories
For the first time, the 2024 Awards will feature a dedicated category for bus organisations, in collaboration with the South African Bus Operators Association (SABOA). This new category acknowledges those companies that excel in promoting road safety within the bus industry. There are three accolades under this category:
- SABOA Best Fleet Manager, honouring outstanding commitment to road safety.
- SABOA Best Operator, recognising individuals who set a positive example within the industry.
- SABOA Best Organisation, for companies that prioritise and implement leading safety practices.
The addition of this category ensures a broader representation of road safety champions and encourages participation from the bus sector.
Categories and Prizes
Several categories are available for entry, each offering a chance to be recognised and rewarded. Key categories include:
- Best Fleet Manager: Grand prize of R50,000, plus R10,000 for winners in the LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle), MCV (Medium Commercial Vehicle), and HCV (Heavy Commercial Vehicle) sub-categories.
- Best Company: Winner receives the Philip Hull Floating Trophy and R10,000, which will be donated to a charitable organisation.
- Road Warrior: Grand prize of R40,000, plus R5,000 for winners in the LCV, MCV, and HCV categories.
- Best Employer: Winner receives a floating trophy and various prizes, including psychometric assessments for drivers.
- Best Truck Stop: Winner receives a floating trophy, along with additional resources to improve facilities.
- SABOA Fleet Safety Awards: Best Fleet Manager (R20,000), Road Warrior (R20,000), and Best Organisation, which receives a floating trophy.
