MIDRAND, THURSDAY JULY 11, 2024 – As FIAT celebrates its 125th anniversary, it is not just a milestone for the iconic automotive brand, but a testament to the enduring passion of its fans. Among them is Tanya O’Connor, whose story exemplifies the profound connection that can form between a car and its owner. For O’Connor, her blue Fiat 500 is more than just a vehicle; it represents a transformative journey in her life.
FIAT, founded in 1899, stands as one of the oldest automotive brands in the world, and its Fiat 500 has become a symbol of its legacy. This year, the Fiat 500 celebrates its 67th birthday, having sold over 7.5 million units worldwide since its debut in 1957. Designed by Dante Giacosa, the Fiat 500 was conceived as an affordable, compact car to aid Italy’s post-war recovery. Over the decades, it has become a cherished part of automotive history.
Tanya O’Connor’s affection for cars is well-known. With 25 years of experience in the automotive sector and a history of racing modified Opel vehicles on South Africa’s most famous tracks, O’Connor’s expertise is extensive. Yet, it was her encounter with the Fiat 500 that redefined her automotive passion.
The story began when O’Connor bought her first Fiat 500 – a white model. However, an unexpected twist occurred when the dealership, Rola FIAT in Somerset West, provided her with a blue Fiat 500 Sport twin air cabriolet while her vehicle was being registered. The moment she laid eyes on the blue beauty, she was smitten. The dealership’s offer to let her keep the blue model was met with enthusiasm, and O’Connor didn’t hesitate to make it hers.
Her dedication to the Fiat 500 runs deep. To commemorate her newfound love, O’Connor had a tattoo of the FIAT logo and a blue Fiat 500 Sport etched between her shoulder blades. The tattoo also features the word “Sprezzatura” – an Italian term meaning effortless elegance – and the Abarth Scorpion, a nod to her astrological sign, Scorpio.

O’Connor’s passion extends beyond her tattoo. Her blue Fiat 500 has influenced her personal style, from blue-dyed hair to a custom blue leather handbag that matches her car. She has become an unofficial ambassador for the brand, frequently showcasing her car’s features and even helping to drive sales at the local dealership.
Her connection to the Fiat 500 has been life-changing, teaching her to simplify and savor the present. “This is a car that spreads joy and happiness,” she notes. “She even dries my hair when the roof is off. In this world, we must use and enjoy all the fun we can get.”
For Karac Chitaka, brand manager at FIAT South Africa, O’Connor represents the ideal brand ambassador. “What really impresses us about Tanya is her deep understanding of cars, which allows our efforts with the Fiat 500 to resonate so strongly with her,” Chitaka says. The anticipation for the upcoming launch of the new Fiat 500e has only added to the excitement.
As FIAT celebrates its 125 years of innovation and excellence, the story of Tanya O’Connor and her Fiat 500 is a vivid reminder of the brand’s enduring impact on individuals and its place in automotive history. With the Fiat 500’s legacy continuing to capture hearts around the world, O’Connor’s passion exemplifies the joy and connection that come from owning an iconic car.
