- Trio of Griffin Greats set for inaugural Car-Fest in aid of Children in Need
Luton – Vauxhall’s latest and greatest sports cars will be heading South this weekend to star in the first ever Car-Fest, brainchild of car-nut DJ Chris Evans, who will be raising money from the event for Children in Need.
Vauxhall’s oldest entrant will be the 1910 C10 ‘Prince Henry’ – Britain’s first catalogued sports car – which has just been put on the road again after an extensive engine rebuild. Pride of Vauxhall’s 70-strong heritage collection, the Prince Henry is the oldest of seven surviving models in the world, and featured prominently as the ‘hero car’ in this year’s Steven Spielberg film, War Horse.
The Prince Henry will be on static display in Classic & Sports Car magazine’s stand at the event, featuring its eight favourite sports cars of all time.
At the heart of Car-Fest, which will be held at Laverstock Park Farm, home of ’79 Formula One World Champion Jody Scheckter, is a BRSCC hillclimb, where Vauxhall will be fielding its second entrant in the Vintage Seven class: the 1926 OE-type 30-98 Velox Tourer. The 30-98 was Britain’s first 100mph production car, and during its 14-year life became a watchword for performance and durability, vying with marques like Bentley for competition success.
But no hillclimb would be complete without a selection of fast and practical support vehicles, carrying equipment and personnel for the motorsport teams at Car-Fest. And perhaps the most eye-catching will be Vauxhall’s vivid-yellow VXR Maloo ‘ute’ (or pick-up), with its 431PS, 6.2-litre V8 engine, rear-wheel drive and a cavernous 1208-litre load deck.
